VT Calais ecotec btw.
So I got really rough by mistake with my high pressure steering hose when removing my pump and it got damaged to the point it won’t work anymore, question is:

Will a non-variatronic hose work with my variable rack? or do I need to hunt down a variable steering hose? from what I can tell there is no difference in the hose.
I can’t find a variatronic hose or even a picture of one but all the non-variatronic hoses look identical to my old one.

Only thing I can think of being different is the threads where it screws to the rack or something? cause I highly doubt the hose itself has something inside it.

Saw another thread about it with an LS1 stato but I can’t figure it out for mine.\

UPDATE: Hoses are identical - ignore repco

I'm not 100%, but, I think all the variatronic stuff is in the rack, and maybe a different pump (though that's probably V6 vs V8) but not the hoses. If you can find an aftermarket supplier, you can do a part number cross reference against a non-variatronic car.

I think the hoses are the same, the difference is inside the pump and the rack.

A decent set of flare nut spanners is a must if working on these types of systems. Regular spanners stuff the nuts to easily unless you are real careful.

Race rack in my VR is a modified variatronic.
Reason I mention is because I still use all stock hoses. Therefore I confirm the threads are the same.

I think there is a difference in pumps. But realistically there is a small chance variatronic has a restrictor in the high pressure hose - but I doubt it.

When I was stuck out in the sticks and a factory hydraulic hose would take 4 days to arrive from the capital, I just rang Enzed Hoses and they came out and fixed the hose for me on the spot. Their vans are well kitted and they have all the required tools...

Being that they fix truck, tractor and excavator hydraulic hoses, I’d thing they can fix your high pressure steering hoses. I‘d also expect they’d know or can check if there are any in internal restrictions or such within your existing hose.

Obviously if they don’t have the end fitting you damaged in stock, then they may not be able to repair on the spot but it’s worth calling them and asking...

( they used to also do aircon hoses but got chased out of that game via regulations :( )

Agreed. Enzed are great. My local Enzed shop is also my local supplier for Aeroflow fittings (as well as other brands). Win/win for me :)

thanks for the advice, my high pressure hose’s metal is the damaged part not the rubber but looking more and more like the hoses are the same.

Also now my return line won’t fit onto the new rack I got, exact match to the old rack, nothing different but it’s at least 20 degrees off and 7cm behind where it needs to be. Have tried to move it around for 8 hours and cannot get it to fit.
Have already checked all along the line for obstructions and there is non, only thing I can think of is somehow the line has bent.

That's the wrong rack. I think you can change hose though and make that rack work.
There's two different flare nut locations on that model and fine and coarse thread rack ends.

As I suspected I had bent the return line out of place during removal, double checked the new rack with the old one and the threads are
In the same place exactly.

took a bit of effort but I got it back on so all is good. Might be a bit bush mechanic ish but she’ll be right.
