Sounds like its running rich if its blowing a lot of soot out the exhaust..When were the 02 sensors and air filter replaced last?

    I would start here then.

    Sounds like its running rich.

Whenever I buy a car I always replace plugs, leads, O2 sensors & filters as they are all wearable parts and unless I know the history of them I don't trust them

Just about every unleaded car will get a small amount of soot on the rear, it will be more noticeable on lighter coloured cars. If you don't think you are, wipe the bumper above the exhaust with a white rag and see how much black you pick up.

Carbon is one of the elements created when fuel burns, carbon is black, it is only natural to expect it to accumulate on the rear of the car where the exhaust exits.

But if it is an excessive amount, then you may have issues.

Short runs will also make this worse as the moisture that condenses inside the exhaust does not boil off and gets sprayed out the back as water droplets instead of steam. High humidity will also make it worse.

can't do much about crap sticking to the back of a car, the back of a car is a low pressure zone compared to anywhere around it... if you ever see a car that is blowing smoke you'll always see oil and crap all over the back of it, anything coming out the exhaust doesn't go straight back and away, it hangs around the back of the car while it's in motion..... can't beat the law of physics unfortunately.

just bought a new air filter I'll see how that goes over this week. I put stainless dump pipes on the car which has helped. Still not good enough though
