I was driving home last week and I noticed the speedo needle started to bounce up and down between 40-60k's (I was driving at 60k's) then it dropped to 0k's then back up to 20 then dropped to 0 then went back to normal, I'm guessing that the spur at the end of the speedo cable is on it's way out, can anyone confirm this that this is a common prob? mate had similar probs with his VL, I thought Holden would of ironed this problem out by the VS, I need to get my tranny rebuilt soon so it would be a good idea to replace the speed cable as well, anyone know how much one is?

There is no speedo cable, its all electronic. Sounds like the vehicle speed sensor is shot, the speedo works on PPK (pulse per kilometre) signals from memory.

Pretty sure its part of the automatic transmission, not sure on the price. I wouldn't imagine it to be too difficult to replace.

I would pull the instrument cluster out and just make sure the needle is sitting on the little shaft nice and tight. Could just be slipping. Do a search on 'odometer' in the how-to section. There is a guide on pulling the instrument cluster out. Just something to check before you go spending $.

I'll wait till it does it again, only done it once, sooner or later I will have to take some stuff apart in the car, these newer cars though are so much fragile, my VL was heaps easier to work on.

my speedo doesnt catch up with my speed for about 3 seconds after i've taken off. at idle, it sits there and bounces between 0 and 20ks. i got told that i need to put more earth wires between some of the wires near the computer and it'll fix the problem.

Is the speedo getting to a spped of about 60-70 then bounces down to zero then back up, then down again at cruising speed, but not under load??
If it is its more then likly a fuse under the dash. It would be the fuse for the Speed Sensor and Reverse Lights. If it is you will have to find out the problem from there as its not likly that the fuse has blown for no reason, although it does happen.
