speedo stoped working!!

    hi just after some answers, i've had a few problems with the engine light latley finaly worked it out soon after the car over heated due to the thermostat housing as soon as i drove it from the mechanics the speedo stoped working and the car wouldn't change out of first gear, when i got it to change into second gear it was reving at 4 gran then slamed into second with the engine light coming on and staying on. any help would be awesome..
