Hi, Something that has interested me for a while now is how different are the laws in Victoria compared to other states when it comes to speeds that will cause you to loose your license. However, asking around, I haven't been able to find anyone who knows anything about these speeds in other states outside of Victoria. In Victoria it's my understanding that we lose or license if we go 25kph over the speed limit (28kph I believe with the 3kph margin), or we can lose our license for going 15kph over the limit in a 110 zone. Just wondering if anyone has any idea what the other states are? Cheers Adza
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK Canberra is on the spot loss of license if you're caught going 45Km/h over.
Exceeding the speed limit by 25km/h or more but less than 35km/h = 4points, 35 km/h or more but less than 45km/h = 6points, 45 km/h or more = 8points. speeding where a vehicle is driven at 45 kilometres per hour or more over the applicable speed limit (or 145 kilometres per hour or more if the speed limit is 110 kilometres per hour) Will result in impounded or immobilised
In vic Exceeding the speed limit by 25km/h or more but less than 35km/h = 4points and 1 month suspension, 35 km/h or more but less than 45km/h = 6points and 6 month suspension,, 45 km/h or more = 8points and 12 month suspension. speeding where a vehicle is driven at 45 kilometres per hour or more over the applicable speed limit (or 145 kilometres per hour or more if the speed limit is 110 kilometres per hour) Will result in impounded or immobilised In Qld Less than 13 kilometres per hour (km/h) over the speed limit = $146 + 1 demerit point. At least 13km/h but not more than 20km/h over the speed limit = $220 + 3 demerit points. More than 20km/h but not more than 30km/h over the speed limit= $366 + 4 demerit points. More than 30km/h but not more than 40km/h over the speed limit= $513 + 6 demerit points. More than 40km/h over the speed limit = $1026 + 8 demerit points and 6 month suspension.
For those who visit NZ exceed the speed limit , 40 km/hr over the speed limit its 28 day suspension of license , 50 km/hr or more over the speed limit and you can face careless/reckless / dangerous driving charges, for speeds of 50 km /hr and over the speed limit a $630 fine is also applicable .
In NSW its 30 over the limit for all zones up to 100, or 130 if you are in a 110 zone. In NSW more than 45k above the limit your car is confiscated under hoon laws, and you need to go to court, I believe. Given that the highest speed limit in Australia is 130 in Nthn Territory, why do we have speedos that go above 130, and cars that go above 130+?? Am playing devils advocate here....any thoughts??
Thanks to those who have replied. Interesting to know. As for Speedos, some reasons may include : Police use standard cars, as do other emergency vehicles. Cars also can be raced or dragged legally in various places. As others have mentioned you also have cars shipped internationally as well, with different laws. Then their is the unknown... Times of emergency. I know of one instance in the country where a worker on a farm got an angle grinder embedded in his skull. Minutes counted. No time to wait for ambos and the police were obliging because of the urgency. I myself know of a number of people personally who have needed extra speed in rural/remote areas in life and death situations. We don't all live in places where ambulances or hospitals are close by. These are of course exceptions and not the majority, but still each with a reason. IMO their is much more important issues than what a Speedo will indicate. Drink driving, and mobile phone use / distractions would have to be the two major causes of accidents on the road. Plus, if a cop pulls me over for excessive speeding and asks me how fast I thought I was going, how can I reply if my Speedo doesn't tell me. (i joke) ;-) Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
OK, Sofar, we have the following (summarising) Vic - 25kph or 125kph NSW - 30kph or 130kph NZ - 40kph. (Yes, it's a state of Australia - they just haven't figured it out yet ) QLD - 40kph ACT - 45kph WA - ?? NT - ??
WA is 45km/h over and vehicle impounded for 28 days (around $950 in release fees at the end), as well as a court date where you will lose you licence for AT LEAST 6 months plus the fines that go with it.
