    VE MY10 SV6 sportwagon (phantom)
I'm looking at updating my car in the next few months and have been considering a few options, at the moment I'm looking at an SS-V, SS or an SV6 sportwagon (all in the VE line).

I have a VY II S sedan at the moment and have been absolutely happy with it so I can see moving to the VE as a painless experience regardless the model that I buy.

I'm now at the point that I want to balance the purchase price vs running costs vs value for money.

There are plenty of reasons that I like the idea of the V8 and the surefire coolness of an SS... also the fact that it's a great Aussie Icon, but just how much more does it cost to run than the V6? Then there is the SS-V and all the extras it brings with it, is it worth the money? I incude the SV6 sportwagon for it's practicality as I sometimes cart a little more than a standard bootload of music and sound equipment around and I think it also has some potential in the looks department.

What are your opinions? Will the V8's cost me a fortune to run? Are they worth the extra outlay, especially the SS-V? Any constructive comments are welcome.

I can't speak for the 6 litre but going from my vy berlina 3.8 to my ss was very painless as far as fuel costs are concerned. Honestly mate, fuel isn't your issue here, you just need to decided what suits you better that's all. My fuel bill has risen so little that i can barely notice it.

I ove my SSV ... would never go back to a 6 ... too much fun.

Rego is more expensive, and I average about 14l per hundred city driving (and with a heavy foot) ... But I figure I enjoy it so much, it's no different than anyone else paying for a hobby or past time.

If you are leaning in the direction of the 6, keep in mind they are releasing a new 6cyl soon that I believe will be pusing around 225kw. On the front cover of the current wheels mag.

14 litres/100 km seems pretty good, I don't think I average much better than 11 or 12 per 100k even considering I live in a rural area. Is that a fairly standard economy figure for the V8? I'm wondering how much difference AFM makes in the end?

get a ssv sportwagon, get a tune, exhaust and an otr, and you'll get 278rwkw (tested), a stock ss puts out 239rwkw

economy is still real good, also dont forget to get a manual

Yeah I'm not complaining ... especially when you see people getting 16-17 litres/100 km driving around in territories and CX7 Mazdas that are relatively gutless ... and by comparison my wife's BMW X5 turbo diesel has as much torque as my SS, and gets 7.8 litres/100 km.

If you're gonna use fuel, use it having fun I say!!!

Dont know about AFM ... I don't think I could go down that path ... sort of like having half a hard on ... Apart from dropping 10kw, and only being available with the Auto ... I'd be concerned that it would limit, or at least complicate the after market tune flexibility.

Get the SS-V mate..I just got an MY9.5 SS-V Sedan before the MY10's came out...figured I would get a better deal..I thought long and hard about getting one or not and at the end of the day I figured, I want a V8, Im paying alot of money for one so why not spend the extra coin for the luxuries you get with a V series...And really if you want a nice V8 you just accept the fact they use more fuel I guess...

    Happy Decision Making!

I own a SV6 Sportwagon at the moment. When you drop the rear seats you can carry a lot of music gear!
However I just signed up for a SSV G8 Sedan in Auto with the AFM. I haven't owned a V8 for a few years, but took a SS Sedan for a test drive & was hooked. The power of the V8 won me over!
Fuel isn't a problem for me as it is paid for by my work ;)

SV6, SS or SS-V, really i guess it comes down to budget

Fuel wise there's a difference say 11L >14L(city, country is similarin L's) but resale in future would probally out way that, rego and ins a little higher.

As posted if you go the V6 wait till new motor comes out(either get one or get a good deal on a runout model)

Re the SS SS-V debate it's really personall i guess, i'm on my second VE SS(sedan, ute) and went this way due to $$$$$ and hate leather in a car which SS-V has.

I bet your VY would use more fuel than a VE SS with AFM..... if you take it easy they dont use much fuel at all... on the other hand if you give them a boot full they can get thirsty...

So if you like the practicality of a wagon go the SS sportswagonwith the 6 speed auto( so you can get the AFM ) you wont be dissapointed...

But i reckon you should get the R8 tourer ;)

go the ssv man, ive got an ve sv6 & after driving an ss i wish i never got the v6. dont think youll pay much more for fuel either they would both be cheaper than the vy. but at the end of the day its up to the buyer, i rekon u should visit the car dealer and ask for a test drive of both, i rekon youll be takin the ssv home with a woody.

Yeah, good idea, although it seems that Toowoomba Holden don't want to sell cars...... I have been there several times, each time being told they didn't have one available for test drive. I gave them my details on a promise that they would contact me to arrange a test drive when they had one in the yard, that was a good month or so ago and still nothing. Looks like I'll have to arrange a drive with another Holden dealer.....

the only reson I didn't get the SS-V is that they didn't have one

as for SS , if u like the idea of v8's , thats the car for you, the torque feeling is great

You were concerned about total cost of the car+ running cost's and the practicality of a wagon in your original post..

So an SS wagon with AFM would be your best option.

Fuel is the least of your worries, after buying the car, paying rego, stamp duty, insurance etc, youve already spent $50-60k.

Average driver uses $3000-4000per year, so **** worrying about fuel. Also, AFM is for pussies, there not real V8's it just affects tune-ability and so on as mentioned above. More things to go wronge and un-even engine wear, in the end, costing more to run and a un-economical engine.

    How aren't they a " real " V8 ?? what do you classify as a V8 ? A supercharged 454 stroker hanging out of a custom rod ? you are a muppet.....

He is deciding whether to get an SV6 or SS or SS/V.....

And how is AFM for pussy's ? Show me a picture of your "real" V8 you big tough man......
