Hey I've been fiddling with the float level on my varajet and was wondering what distance you've put between the top of the carby and the top of the float, I put around 8mm at the moment. Although it is a rough measurement.

8mm is the correct float level.
I found when I rebuilt my carby that you have to be very accurate, so, be very accurate!

My Gregories and Max Ellery manual both say 8mm and mine is running great at the moment, I found that anything else other than 8mm and it would run bad.
