    Hey guys,

I want to know what precautions i need to take before starting a car (VS S3 Statesman, Ecotec V6) thats been sitting in a drive way for 8 months. Should i do an oil change? Take the rocker covers off and cover in oil etc? What things to check for...

    Cheers, Errol

Well the battery will be dead flat, so I would be trickle charging that for a day or so before reinstalling it in the car. As for the car itself, I would just turn it over and let it warm up for 10 mins or so idling and then go for a gentle drive. Providing that the oil is in good condition you will be fine, as pressure will be built up before you even finish cranking it over.

I'd probably look at giving the coolant and engine oil a full flush after you have had it running though, just to clean anything out that may be in there, especially in the cooling system.

Well the car is heavily damaged at the back, so its undrivable. Im considering buying the car to wreck. So basically i was going to start the engine (ive been told its done 130,000kms) but i didnt want to kill it by not doing something... EG oil change.

Ill put a new battery in to start it. The old battery was taken out.

8 months over summer shouldn't be too bad. Take the EFI fuse out and crank it for a few seconds to get oil pressure up, then replace the fuse and start it. It will probably rattle and idle rough for a minute or two, but once the temperature gauge starts to move, you should be right. This is after checking the oil and coolant levels of course.

When you drive it, you will probably have flat spots on the tyres, and the brakes will make a noise due to rust on the rotors, but apart from that, it should be fine.

i got one 3 months ago. i just started it and let it run until hot. dumped the oil then ran diesel oil in it for about 2 hours at idle. dumped that and changed the filter. worked a treat.
