Maybe in the future yeah, you could definately feel the heat soak after an hour or so drive in 36 degrees.

Heat soak = also maybe in the future ceramic coating !!! the mainfold not sure how effective it is!

So something a little different.

I've been getting the heads ready for the new engine, went to pull the valve springs off so I could drop the valves before sending the heads off to get cleaned and skimmed.

My Procomp Chyyyyna valve spring compressor gave out on me and snapped the bolt off clean in the rocker stud hole, got some ezyouts and with a bit of patience I got it back out without damaging the thread......very ass clenching moment as these heads are mint.

Sloppy Mechanics were right, this really is the best feeling in the world.

I actually use a big G-clamp as a valve spring compressor.....I have a slot cut in the top section, so the valve top goes through....
Cheaper than specialised spring compressor you'll buy and probably better quality..

Had it for about 25 years and lost count of the heads I've done with it....

So a little food for thought :)

Thats a really good idea. The main reason I bought this one was so I could do the LT1 valve springs when I put the 276 in the current engine with the heads on. I'm very glad in hindsight that it did this on the head outside the engine than the one in the engine bay :p

I'm looking at making one out of thick steel rather than 'chineseium' essentially it's just a lever with a bolt through it at the end of the day as I'd like one I can use in engine bays as well as on the bench.

Pretty dissapointing that the procomp one failed after approx 17 odd springs, considering it was $140

I made this one all those years ago, because I was in a similar situation.....Bought a you beaut spring compressor worth around the $60 mark, only to have it fail after 2 or 3 valves.....From memory, it broke at the pivot point of the compressor....So the you beaut compressor went back...got my money back and went to the local hardware store, splurged out $10 (I think) and spend a whole 5 minutes cutting the necessary slot in place.....

Oh and procomp...Heard good and bad reports about their gear....Mostly bad unfortunately and this situation you are in puts another tick in the bad column...

Anyways, best of luck with the removal of the rest of the springs and putting them back in.....I'm just glad that things didn't go really pear shaped for you.... :)

Rags & socket with hammer method to get them apart....decent brand spring compressor from whatever relo or friend's workshop will let me use lol.

Customer's cars it was easier to tell them pay to get heads shaved for better performance than to say heads fubar'd need a reco otherwise cam job is waste of coin.

I think I got a g-clamp style spring compressor from Summit for dimes about 10 years ago and haven't had a single issue.
