Hey guys, Does anyone know how to flush a radiator? I have never done anything like this before so step by step would be good. If anyone could take the time to write it out, that would be awesome. Thanks!
remove the bottom hose and drain the fluid. Re conect the bottom hose and then undo the top hose. Stick your garden hose in the filler cap and wait until clean water comes out the top radiator hose.
so drain it while cold, start the car, and then fill it? then after that, do i fill it with just coolant.
yeh, it needs to be cold or you will be burnt badly. After you have flushed it. drain it all again. and fill it with coolant and distilled water. Then your good for another 40,000+ kays
Mate theres a bit more to it when doing it properly, do what was said and also have both top and bottom hoses removed and flush the radiator until it runs clear. Now remove the two heater hoses from the block, now put your garden hose in the one that runs along the driver`s side of the block (bottom of the two connection`s on the fire wall) and have the other pointing away from any parts that don`t like water and flush the heater core until it runs clear, also inspect and replace any crap hose`s. to be honest go out and buy all under bonnet hoses before you do it and replace them if you have never done it since you`ve owned the car, as the $100 odd outlay is better than just ignoring it and messing with old hose`s and refitting them only to have them fail at 110km/h and you don`t notice. Refill to the point you can`t get any more in and put the cap on, now undo the BLEEDER screw and purge the air out.
what is the system contaminated with? if its oil then id use a radiator flush mix which is put into the cooling system, then it gets drained after circulating for abit to dislodge and remove and deposits. Best spot to flush you cooling syste is via a heater hose, drain the coolant from the bttom radiatopr hose, connect it back up, then undo a convenient heater hose, stick a garden hose in one end and turn it on, then as soon as the hose is turned on (not full blast) turn the motor on and swicth the heater on full blast. watch all the crap come out the other end of the hose, when it stops, stop the motor, put the garden hose in the other end of the heater hose (where the water was coming out) then repeat the same process. Its also a good idea to remove the thermostat to ensure a proper flush as it may not fully open while your doing this.
The fancy thing the 6 pots get so me and you have make do with reving the car a bit with the radiator cap off.
