Hey all

Have a 2002 Calais doing few things to get it roadworthy.

Noticed the horn doesn’t work and the horn pad is very spongy I could almost sink my hand into it... another issue is the airbag light is on.

So with these 2 things in mind my assumption is the airbag may have been deployed some time in the past (cars been unreg for about 3 years). No front end damage though.

haven’t checked power to the horn but my main concern is why the horn pad is extremely soft... I pressed the horn pad on my berlina and it’s extremely stiff and engages the horn in usual working order.

so after researching I’ve seen solutions such as: clock spring, fuse/relay for horn, a replacement horn, a replacement horn pad with airbag or go the whole way and complete replacement steering wheel

any help is much appreciated cheers

if it had ever been deployed the pad splits.

get it checked by a mechanic mate you can injure yourself quite badly messing about with an undeployed airbag.

It sounds like your car may be missing the air bag.

Seems like it. Can’t believe brand new genuine are $400 should I risk one from the wreckers with warranty

If you pull the horn pad off you will soon know if the airbag has been taken out or not. This has to come off to do the clock Spring anyway. Disconnect the battery before removing it. You need torx bits to get the pad off. If you don't have them supercheap sell small sets for $15. If it only needs a horn pad put another one on and then go to supercheap to get them to scan the codes and turn the airbag light off. They charge $14 to do it. I did the clock Spring on my vx a few months ago for rego and if you have to do it, it's not that hard. Clock Spring was $220 off eBay for genuine one.

I doubt that Supercheap can reset ABS codes, only the general engine related codes. Also they charge $28 to reset codes. Note the disclaimer on the bottom of the attachment taken from the Supercheap web site:
