Strange Noise - maybe transmission?

Howdy,

I have noticed of late a whine type noise coming from the car when i reach 65kms/hr and upwards. It happens when in 6th gear only but from what i can tell it doesn't increase in pitch as i go faster. I could also hear it when i mash the pedal and keep it there.

Any clues?
