The dealer I'm currently having mine done at said around $3k initally, but that came down to $2.5k (who knows what they're going to charge in the end). i asked another dealer before i took it there and they quoted $3-3.5k. I think you're best to stick with a dealer for this kinda job.

As for Holden covering some of the cost, they'd wanna be taking some of the heat for something they've said is a design fault. That's my opinion anyway.

Well the sprocket that was ordered last Tuesday/Wednesday still hasn't arrived. I cannot understand how it can take that long, I thought Holden would have overnight delivery? It almost makes me think I'm not getting the full story from them. Anyway, they've got no idea when it will be here, no idea when my car will be ready, no idea what colour a white piece of paper is etc

In better news the badge I bought off ebay for the front grill arrived today. Oh yeah, I bought that on Wednesday night and it came from QLD. Take note Holden...

If this keeps dragging out is there anything I can do? Call Holden? I feel like I've been ####ed around royally but just have to sit back and take it, I don't think having a go at the dealer will do me any favours.

if i were you i wouldnt take my car back there, simple as that.... the time they have taken is pretty unacceptable really. its a day job, not a couple weeks job.

have they supplied you with a loan car?

hi guys...just registered so i can join in this thread.
my 06 calais just started making some serious lifter noise under load, so have not run it since friday.
reading all these threads, and realising the similarities, i suspect my chains have stretched.
qoute of about 2400 from dealer, but i work at a truck dealership and have an ex employee mechanic contact, experienced with timing chain change, and has quoted me about 600 including parts.
does this sound like they would be non genuine parts?

Nah they havent, they didnt even mention it. I've been using my old mans car though so its ok.

600 seems a little too cheap, I think the timing chain alone is roughly $500... I could be very wrong though. $2400 from the dealer doesnt seem too bad.

Well that does seem mighty cheap...

I was told today that Holden will cover 33% of the cost for replacing the timing chain, pretty good result I guess. So I'd suggest if anyone else is in a similar situation to make sure you contact Holden about your problem.

Apparently my car will most likely be ready on Friday as they are STILL waiting for the sprocket from Melbourne. I'm really not holding my breath.

had a neighbour (holden dealership mechanic) listen to it tonight and he thinks 90% probably timing chain, maybe oxygen sensors can also put timing out. am taking it to him at work tomorrow to look at error codes to be sure. he is also getting prices for me for all necessary parts.
will take it from there once i know the diagnostic.

Mine didn't even make any noises or do anything to suggest anything was wrong, I only knew something was up because of the check engine light. Although when the car was idling it would have a slight vibration every couple of seconds which could have been it, or it may have been totally normal as I've never focussed on it before. Hopefully for your sake its the oxygen sensors, would be a lot cheaper.

Actually sometimes it seemed a little down on power. That could have just in my head though.. also probably not down to the timing chain as I assume it would be constantly down on power not occasionally

    good news mitch
had the diagnostic done, and error says oil flow problem....probably just a case of filter and oil change..
annoying though, as i expect the car had a filter and oil change at last service, just 15k ago. maybe dodgy mechanic charged for it but didnt change it...who knows , just maybe.
will be buying filter and oil tomorrow and changing myself at weekend....so should turn out cheap as chips.

Thats good to hear mate, hope it works out to be the simple fix

Well $2,000 and 2 and a half weeks later I've got my car back and it seems to be running well. As soon as i started driving it I realised just how good it is to drive after driving another car.

Only thing is I notcied the black plastic piece which goes around the bottom of the drivers seat has been broken away from the seat itself. You can see all the wiring in behind it... which I assume could be for the air bags? Certainly wasn't like that before I took it in. Bloody hell.

****..thats a bit lame. wiring probably for the seat electrics. proving it was them is another thing though.

good you got your car back though.

changed oil filter and oil this morning, and presto...good as new.
just goes to show, never assume you know what the problem is until you get the error codes read.
    2 x bottles Castrol magnatec $56
    1 x oil filter cartridge $6

total repair $62.... am i a happy camper
