So I want to change my tail shaft as the in my car has seen better days. The problem is on the 15" nut it looks sort of threaded. Now when I have both spanners on (this was just 1 nut) I could turn them both the same way fine, but when it came to cracking them no go. I didn't want to thread the nut anymore than it is so I stopped. Two have came loose a few times while I've been driving so I tighten them up I just dont know why they are being so difficult. (none of them have lock tight on either) any help is greatly appreciated
If there not coming off, u may have to get some replacement bolts from either a fastener joint or Holden. If my memory serves me correctly, the nut actually rests on a lip on the end of the tailshaft, so u only need 1 spanner to undo the bolt. I ended up cutting mine off, coz I didn't work out. Then we found it. I felt retarded coz only 2months earlier I had it out for balancing without an issue. Got new bolts and happy days.
the nut locks against the flange on the flat edge, you undo and tighten it from the bolt as once it's done up you can't turn the nut, the nuts are a lock nut style.
But they've came off before when I converted my car to manual, just put in an old manual tail shaft for the time being until I could get one in good nick
Are you worried about breaking or stripping them? they have to come off either way so get a good pair of spanners and try untill something happens. If they are gonna break or strip its gonna happen, nothing you can do.
yes they will turn once the bolt has been undone far enough allow them to slide forward away from the ridge in the flange that they lock against, if they're done up you should not be able turn the nut. If they're installed properly you should only have to turn the bolt head (14mm from memory) to crack the bolt and undo it, same when installing it but in reverse you don't have to hold the nut with a spanner unless something is wrong.
