We to once had that strong fuel smell and for us the cure was to replace the fuel cap.

Mine was an injector
One had done a top rubber and was leaking. A week later the fuel line in to the fuel rail started leaking .. new clamps done the trick..

I know it sounds too simple, but for a lot of people the problem is just the fuel cap. Check the spring on the little cover thing under the cap, and replace the cap itself. It might look ok, but they can crack, dry out and shrink, the thread wears out over time... and you get the fuel smell. It's a cheap thing to rule out first.
