I'm not sure what type of oil was used when i got my last service but the oil needs a top up. Is it ok to put anything in? like 15w-40?

Sometimes they write the oil type on the receipt as part of the itemised list of stuff. Should have a look at that and see if it's there if you still have the receipt.

I would look into why it needs oil if your service wasnt that long ago weather theres a leak or its burning etc might just need a new pcv valve or rocker gaskets or just hasnt hasn changed for a very long time
