My car is always inclined to get a bit hot in summer, particularly in traffic. Seeing it is a BT1 it has a sump guard, and this would stop some air passing around the hot sump. Has anyone ever done an A/B temperature test with and without the sump guard?

At a guess the differences would be marginal at best, and it won't make a difference in traffic as you're not moving. Not to mention there's no cooling fins on the 304 sump and the volume of oil would probably negate any effects anyway.

Not sure if it will show on Google but Phil Irving(of Repco Brabham V8 fame) did a comprehensive analysis of the effects of the sump(design & materials used) on cooling engine oil, someone will have a copy.
IIRC,and it was back in the 1960/70's,his conclusion was finned alloy(flavour of the month at the time) sumps were useless in cooling oil,you have to dry sump or fit an external oil cooler.

My Neville Nobody opinion is airflow around the sump would have to have some effect you would think.
