I brought a 2006 SV6 3.6 alloytech about a month ago and it has some sort of issue with using a bit of coolant. Generally about 200ml on the days i drive it (I am filling from the radiator the next day, not the resivor) ....usually i do about 100ks on an average day. The temp gauage stays at its normal 1/4 mark and I have had it move up slightly to the next marker, so sitting about 3/8. This happens when stuck in slow traffic, as soon as cars moving again (100km) it comes back down.
Now, I've found that it uses no water at all if I have my heater temp slightly over half and it will only move temp guage up if I'm stuck in traffic for like 5 min. But if i put the temp to the cool side, it moves up to that 3/8th mark alot quicker and the next day it has used some water. This is not with any fans going for the heater it is simply just the dial itself I am adjusting.
I've never had the temp hit the 1/2 way mark but there's obviously something not quite right going on. I've been through and read a lot of the cooling issues on here but nothing seems to match up and its not overheating as much as most others. Any ideas on what it could be? It's my first Holden and I'm in love...i just dont want to leave the issue in case it turns into something major.
Thanks.

Haven't been able to find any leaks. Not using any water if heater is turned to warm but on cool it does...is there 2 different ways the water goes depending in the heater setting? Just wondering if the cool setting side may have a leak...or a block...

I don't but have brought new coolant and have a mate who knows how to do it for me. But yeah just seeing if there are any others who may know what the issue is incase I end up dumping coolant 2 or 3 times figuring it out. Cheers for the pointers

Bleed it first , see if there's any air bubbles in the system .

Then check around the heater tap to see if there's any leaks

Carefully check the radiator all over for small leaks or wet patches after a drive. Also check the back of engine where the thermostat is.

Don't keep on throwing good money at the problem with little hope of resolving it. Seek out a reputable Cooling System Specialist and they will perform necessary tests to identify any leaks etc, INCLUDING pressure testing the system which is the only realistic way of identifying leaks.. Good luck.
