Hey all I currently fill up with normal unleaded 91 in my 2008 ve omega, could i change it up and fill up with BP 98 ? The car has done 96000km. Is it ok to do this or is it too late and i have to run my ve just on normal 91 as im hearing that you can run a higher octane sometimes in newer cars as it tends to clean the engine a bit. Also im changing my spark plugs this weekend to new ones if that helps ? Thank you
You will have no problems changing your fuel type to a higher octane. If you're really concerned you can also change out the fuel filter but it's going to make no difference.
Nothing will change, your simply changing to a better fuel. I have heard though it takes a few fills to get better performance and the other benefits out of the car. Don't go changing fuel types, by this I mean don't fill up with 98 and the next week 91.
If i fill up with 95 or 98 i have to stick it with for a while or its a permanent thing as i dont want to cause any damage ?
Modern cars have sensors that can determine the type of fuel being used and get the most out of it. Swapping to and from 91 to 98, for example, will not damage the engine. And despite the claims of some, an odd tank of E-10 is fine too. I have heard anecdotal evidence to suggest 98RON fuel with cleaning agents (such as BP Ultimate) can result in a cleaner engine and less gunk building up on the injectors - I cannot vouch for this though. Simple answer, yeah mate you can go to 98RON fine. You'll probably notice slightly improved fuel economy and performance. You could swap back to 91 at any time and by extension, back to 98.
Thanks for clearing that up MikeCuzzy, im not going to switch from 91 to 98 every week. Ill will fill up next time with 98 for a month or even longer then when i feel like it or start to feel the dollars from the 98 ill switch it back to 91
The difference in 60 litres of 91 to 98 is only around $6-$7 on average, with BP anyway. Theoretically the higher octane fuel burns more efficiently getting you more kms per litre so the difference is even less.
