Drove the VY S2 Manual V6 to QLD for a couple of days over Christmas. Car was loaded with five and a boot full. Drove up on Christmas Eve (Saturday). Filled up on Pennant Hills Road, averaged just under 90 KPH and reached Tugan without adding any fuel. Took 64.5 litres for the 830 Km. That is on a par with my VS S2 Manual V6 that is much lighter. The VY had 5,000 Km at the start, so is probably not fully run in yet. Happy with the consumption.
We did the same trip last year. But mines a VX II 5 speed 6. I reckon we would've got 1000ks outta the tank had we pushed it all the way! Way better than the VS I used to have. Only got 700 outta a tank long dist. So Im pretty happy too!!!
yeah my vy did the same 1 tank, 5 speed manual i got it to around 8.9L/100k sat on 100kms most the way with cruise control on part from dam 60 town zones =[
Went for a drive in my vy2 calais today (400kms) sat around the 8.4 to 9L/100kms on a day of 42 degrees! pretty happy with that.
i averaged 10l/100km for a 423km trip using 45 litres, but there was a few flat out overtaking going on and my car revs at 2500 at 105kmph in 5th
This is the thing about Big slow revving motors. (Even F.O.R.D.S get this effect!) My S1 VS did 8.6 Sydney/Canberra (with 270K's) on the clock. Best thing I ever did to my VS was put a cruise into it. My new VY seems about the same. I usually screw the cruise onto about 115Km/h - Seems to give about 2050 RPM indicated. Including driving around Canberra for 4 nights - 9.1! on the cruise sections I was down to 8.5.
This is the norm it seems dude!! I did a Melb to Adelaide in 2001 in my old VT Exec (total 730kms) on only 58 litres! and that was averaging 100km/h. Also, did you use cruise control alot?
I regularly get 9.4l/100kms out of my Clubby. She loves loping along at 100km/h at 1600 rpm in sixth all day!! Last year drove from Melb to Parkes and still had about 6 ltrs left! That too was through temps ranging from 14deg to 40+deg. This trip was done on Shell Optimax though, a fuel I usually hate, this year I am going to try it on either United 98Boost E10 or Shell Optimax Extreme E5 100RON, I am hoping for better results after seeing some research figures!! Keep you all posted!!
Use Cruise Control a Lot! I use cruise control and speed alert where ever I can on the highway. Allows me to watch the road/traffic without distraction. I had driven my VS from Windsor to QLD (Warwick) up the New England Highway before on one tank, but it could not make it up the Pacific due to fuel quantity of 16 litres less and the impact of additional traffic.
Drove from Alice to Dwn & back over christmas.14L /100km at 150. But got 13.7/100 at 155 kmh. Not sure if it was a tail wind on the way back that gave the slightly better economy.
Just came back from a trip to Melb and on the way back to Syd in my dads VY Acclaim S2 we got final figures of 8.0/100 not bad at all. My SV6 got figures of 7.6/100 driving back from Canberra and had only done 1000ks at that stage.
i'm sure you blokes will loose economy while travelling the outback..... 1 especially during daytime cos of hot air... 2 cos of dry humidity.... i live there and know how hot the air gets during the day... i just bought VX a few weeks ago but havent been on a trip..... after i seen and read about the shitty IRS tyre probs i sold it today.... i like the Commy but not sure which model to get.....
Hot air can make minimal difference usually, I was driving in 35-40 deg heat in Nthrn NSW last year in the Clubby R8 and still got under 10l/100kms out of it.
Two sides to heat. On the one hand, higher temperatures may lead to heavier use of aircon, and have an adverse impact on fuel economy. On the other, however, higher temperatures effectively give a higher density altitude. That equates to less power available but also less aerodynamic drag at a given speed, i.e. lower power required to maintain the given speed. In theory, fuel economy in a modern fuel injected engine should be slightly better at higher temperatures. That was not the case in the past with carby engines, for which fuel flow was generally dependent on intake air pressure rather than mass air flow.
Just came back from Taree to Sydney in my VYII Exec (auto) with wife and son and bootload of gear, aircon most of the way both up and back, 655km at 8.8L/100km. I think the magic mark is 2000RPM in top to keep the consumption down. I find if I use the cruise at 115 (giving me about 2100RPM) I cant get less than 9.5L/100km highway style. I know, only an extra 700ml of fuel for 100 long km, but hey...figures are good.
Agreed... 2000RPM seems to be the "sweet spot" for Ecotecs. Maybe a 100 RPM or so less. Do any of the ECU experts on the forum know where the V6 is achieving the best volumetric efficiency? On the Aircon thing - I noticed that when my VYI is stopped the trip computer shows 1.9L per HOUR with the Air on. Turn it off and the number drops to around 1.6L/hr. Does this mean that Aircon costs .3L/hr to run. I realise that raising the RPM above idle will change this. Maybe I should take some readings.... Cheers BottFodder
