VS Wagon Manual
My T5 is pretty much on the way out - I've never rebuilt a gearbox before but have a pretty decent mechanical knowledge, so I'm tossing up whether to rebuild it or replace it.

In regards to the replace, with there being so many T5 variations around, do I have to get SPECIFICALLY a 3.8 V6 T5, or will, say, the 4.1 Falcon T5 work too?

Basically, do I have any movement on which models I can use? T5's are pretty expensive over here and seem relatively uncommon and the last thing I want to do is buy another one only to have it not be compatible.

Any T5 would be ok, as the bell housings are interchangeable. It's either a World Class series with uses ATF fluid or a non world class which uses manual gear oil.

I rebuilt my T5 in my ute when the input shaft bearing shat itself. A rebuild kit cost me stuff all as I got it cost price though work. Close to a two hour job if you have all the right tools. Puller, press, etc.

Not quite.

Any T5 from a V6 Commodore will be ok.

Different vehicle applications have different bolt patterns on the gearbox and also use different input shafts.

Inside the boxes is fairly simple, if you are a bit handy a rebuild will be fairly simple. There are repair manuals online and parts are easy to come by.

True! I knew only about the Ford and V8 T5s.

Copied image.

In hindsight though, you can easily input shafts and bellhousing to suit the change.

Internals of the gearbox are the same.

1st gear is also part of the input shaft so you will also need to make sure that the 1st gear ratio matches if you are going to swap parts, also the front bearing retainer that the release bearing runs on needs to match the input shaft.
