Ok my brother has a vr manual ute and the gearbox is half rooted. He has got access to a getrag box out of a VT and wants to know if it can be put in his VR? (changing the bell housing and what not to bolt onto the buick) Has anyone tried this conversion or is it not do-able? Cheers
getrags use a dual mass fly wheel. The VR would have a solid fly wheel. I would call a transmission expert and ask whther they are interchangable. Also the getrag clutch is fluid operated, so i guess that would need to be looked at too. Malwood automotive would be a good start to ask.
on the note of the dual amss flywheel... If he ends up finding out it is interchangeable the FIRST thing he wantsw to do is replace that POS with a rigid flywheel! I cannot wait until my clutch n flywheel f*cked up again so i can justify upgrading to a HD clutch and rigis flywheel... Mind you i have my clutch n fly replaced in March of 2006 and now i recon its on its way out again... slipping and so on.. Their good if u drive the car like a 90yo asian but if ur gonna give it abit it will not be happy! Good luck with it!
getrags are a POS, stay with the T5 and the dual mass flywheels are expensive to do when replacing a clutch
ECO-TEC with getrag box. Does any one know of a company that builds a solid fly wheel for the eco-tec motor...as I have had trouble with my clutch i'm putting to much power through a dual mass fly wheel an clutch. I've been an seen a mechinist about moderfing a buick fly wheel to suite but they advise not to change the crank bolt patton from a 6 hole fly wheel to a 8 hole. Is there like a kit you can buy with a solid fly wheel an a heavy duty clutch or even a twin plate.
Available from clutch specialists. Solid flywheels and heavy duty clutches are available from specialists such as Exedy (spelling may be wrong). Looked into one a year ago. Cost of the swap was about $1,100, cheaper than a replacement dual mass flywheel and clutch kit. Get in touch with your nearest independent clutch specialist.
sweet thanks, when i replaced my clutch last time exedy told me i had to replace the fly wheel instead i buffed it to get the heat stress out an checked the tension on the springs....there has been no problem so far only problem is it slips a lil bit when you snap 2nd or put heaps of power through it eg. 2nd gear rev limiter. Dual mass fly wheel combination with a single plate isn't good enough for 156rwkw out of a v6
