Ive been getting a banging kind of noise coming from the rear of the car. Mostly when taking off in 1st. It isnt too obvious when im by myself in the car, but the other night when I had a full car load, no matter how softly i took off, it would start banging quite badly. Is this a tailshaft or centre bearing issue? Car is a manual V8
probably uni joints i'd say or cv joint i doubt its the bearing but could be best to get under and have look easier to check if you take it out you should be able to hold it either side of the uni's and twist there should be no movement if there is replace uni's for center bearing check to see if rubber is deformed replace center bearing if it is cv joint a little harder usualy need to pull it apart and check the races to see if they are damaged easy to tell by scoring and stuff might need to be repacked with grease aswell
Seeing as its worse when the car is loaded it could be the exhaust hitting somewhere or one of the control arms shot allowing the diff housing to move.
ha, im getting this too when I take off, only if I half plant it its good because it keeps me driving her nice and easy, though the uni's closest to the diff and the trans both need replacing and my pinion seal is gone, every now and then it sprays a little more out of the diff If I wasn't so lazy i'd fix it next weekend when I can afford all of the parts but meh, we'll see how I like this attitude when i'm walking
Centre bearing. Mine did the same, failed and everytime I loaded it up it just bashed around under the car.
DOH, so I need to do the diff, uni's and a CV, so much for dont do burnouts and the car should last, what a crock of crap, I should go bag it up all the time like my mate used to with his VR, that thing was bullet proof. I hate bad luck, wreckers here I come, money there you go.
How low is your vr? Seeing that its worse when loaded with people in the back ive seen this happen with a mates vr. Turned out to be the rear uni where it bolts ontop the diff was hitting up onto the floorpan in the tailshaft tunnel and had just about worn its way through the metal. Would be worth checking out.
How are the rear wheels as far as camber goes? If you reverse, does it look like it has more camber? If it does then the diff cradle is cracked. But I just think it is the exhaust hitting where it goes under the axle.
ive had a look and the exhaust is pretty close to the drive shaft. wouldnt surprise me if thats the problem. how is this usually fixed?
being IRS and the fact that the exhaust travels under the axles when the car is fully loaded the there would be more clearance between exhaust and axles/diff. if it is hitting the exhaust there should be some witness marks i'd be checking the diff cradle
In the top picture, where the twin pipes are expanded and go over the pieces in front, check how close they are to the control arm.
