Trying to remove my tailshaft and the four bolts at the diff just refuse to budge.

Any tricks? They aren't rounded and I've tried smashing them with WD-40. If I could I'd rattle gun the bastards but no way a socket is going on there.

    Thoughts?

You have to undo it at the bolt head not the nut, have you tried that?

Give the nuts a tap on the side with a hammer and punch. If you dont love your spanners you could slide a pipe over it for more leverage.

No dramas- I'll grab a punch tomorrow and I'll try and find a longer spanner.

Try find a six side spanner if you can. Also if you undo the shock absorbers at the diff and let it drop down there might be enough room to get a socket and power bar in there, possible even a rattle gun haha

Try for the six sided stuff if you can, rounded bolts suck.

Yer mate use a hammer and punch. Maybe use some penterate I think it is. Comes in a yellow bottle, works past the rust and breaks the seal.
With the rattle gun, have you got a uni joint?

A uni joint for the socket? Yeah but the socket won't find on because the saddle thing gets in the way.

Yeah mate- it's still all in the car. Trans, driveshaft, diff.

Engine and exhaust is dropped. I think part of the problem is that when I really crank on the spanner you can see it all flex. Buggered if I know how to secure the transmission to stop it though.

Thats why I suggested you lift the car up and drop the diff for more clearance ( just undo the shocks ). this MIGHT work, might as in I haven't tried it

    hand brake?

    Handbrake is on.

It's the actually shaft and transmission that flexes. I can crank it hard enough to make the transmission rock. The transmission is still connected to the crossmember. Maybe if I can stop that movement all of the torque will be applied to the bolt and the bastard will come loose. I can't think of how to stop the tranny rocking though.

If I am dropping the diff I'd just remove the diff and tailshaft as a whole and try and sort it out of the car.

I was hoping to wait until I had new gears before dropping the diff and sending it off to be built.

You cant really, you need heat or a rattle gun.

Give the hammer and punch method a try. Just a few sharp cracks on one face of the nut should shock it loose. You not trying to undo the nut with the hammer and punch, just shock it to free it up a bit.

So clobber the nut? Why not punch it on the top face of the bolt?

You want to concentrate the shock close to the thread I guess, by all means hit the head of the bolt too if you want, wont really hurt I spose.

Algood man. He who asks a question looks like a fool for five minutes, he who dosent ask the question is a fool forever.

By the way, I dont mean take the diff out, just UNDO THE SHOCK MOUNTS so that the UJ opens up more giving you more room to get at the bolt lol

or use a half decent ring spanner on the bolt and give it a couple of whacks with a rubber mallet or piece of wood to start the bolt moving that way
(can't turn the nut as it's locked to the flange on one the the flat sides but i guess you've already worked that bit out)
