Even looking in a year its $377 (four + car) before accommodation. Captive market I guess, you want your own car (why not with a V8), you pay the coin

This summer holiday will be expensive as I reckon 50% of Melbourne wants to go somewhere, and regional Vic airbnbs are already >$1000 per night in some spots apparently!

I overpaid for flights to Qld at xmas, but wanted to be with family up there.

Car is normally about $130 each way. Passengers are is about the same each way. Cheaper option is one person on the ferry with vehicle and the others fly to Launceston.

What did that cost you?

$1500 for two. Some flight cancellation/date moving tax in there, as we booked before the border actually opened, so at the time could not (and might feasibly still not if it all falls over again) be able to go.

Balanced against desire to be with family and no accommodation costs.

Toi see Tassy properly you will need to either fly/drive or boat/drive. The benefits of the latter is that your bags are packed in the vehicle you will be travelling with. Either way travelling to the small island is going involve spending some beer tokens. The locals are friendly, the food is excellent and the scenery is great. Once you have returned the cost of the trip will seem insignificant compared to the enjoyment.

Be prepareed if you head to Freyshinet NP. Fill up well outside the park and take your own food - they will rob you blind otherwise.

Yeah and don't bother with a cabin it's a waste of money for the time onboard. Just have a nap in your chair and spend some time at the bar.
