Hey just changed my thermostat to a high flow thermostat, as I rev my car to get it to OT it has a tapping noise like soft hits of a hammer on a nail but fast. Doesn't do it at idle though, any idea what could be causing this? Cheers

Also I've changed my thermostat, radiator, top and bottom hose and my waterpump yet idling my car is still creeping to 3/4. No matter how many people wanna say its normal, it shouldn't be. What else can be tested and what else can be causing this? Cheers

The noise could just be the injector's or lifters..also check the spark plugs are in tight... there is hundreds of moving parts so it really could be anything
Re the temp..... is the fan switching on before it gets to 3/4 ? if not does it run when you switch on the aircon ?

@ commodore665 re your sig :) the guy standing behind you with both his hands on your shoulders can :D

    Could be valve train related.

Have you bled your cooling system correctly? Might pay to do it a few times in a day.

    What oil viscosity you using?

My Ecotec has the normal injector click.

Fan only kicks in at high speed, new fuse doesn't fix low speed fan and yes it comes on for the ac. I'm not sure about oil but will try and change it soon. And I'm 99% sure I've bled it correct, although it struggles to get flow out the bleeder hole.

Re the 3/4 temp have you bled the system correctly after changing all those components, could be trapped air.

Also is your thermo fan still kicking in when it gets hot?

I had the same issue with my VS last year, was getting to 3/4 temp for no reason, turned out some of the radiator core was blocked...replaced the radiator never went over 1/4 since so yes I can tell you 3/4 temp is definitely not normal...something is at play there

educated ear... but injectors sound more like a relay clicking on and off..lifters more metallic clatter that may change with temp rpm but the same could be said for piston slap and gudgeon (spelling?) pin rattle
exhaust leak is another thing to look at
Honestly if its internal there isn't much you can do cheaply... keep the fluids clean and topped up and drive it till it go's bang, then you will know for sure :)

It could be a faulty cts or temp gauge sender.... among other things like the above mentioned blocked radiator, is there much crap stuck in the fins of the radiator and/or ac condenser? lack of air flow will cause the same issues.

At what point is the cooling fan turning on? and off by the tempo gauge?
When it's at 3/4 temp, how hot does the top radiator hose feel? (can touch it for a few seconds or it's to hot to touch for a milli second?)
Where does the temp gauge sit when you're cruising above 60-70 kmh?

It kicks on at not the red line, but between the 2 white lines before it and the hose is HOT! Can't touch it at all. Its a new radiator so been checking and there's no build up at all. Its only at idle, when I drive its at 1/4 now, but once I stop and idle, its up over half with in like 15 seconds and within another 15 its up over 3/4. When I idle I purposely turn on my ac just to help keep it lower

Replace the CTS then, if it's staying cool while moving then there is enough air/coolant flow.
If the fan is delaying till the engine is that hot then the ecu/pcm isn't getting the correct signal telling it what temp the engine is, if you have a laptop or scantool then hook that up to confirm this, or spend $25 and replace the cts.....

or get your trusty gregorys manual out, put some water in a pot, connect a multimeter to the cts, put a thermometer in to watch the temp, stoke up the stove and see what resistance reading the CTS has to the water temp as it goes from room temp to boil and make sure it's reading correct.
