Equinox LTZ - runs on cocaine
KATE KYRIACOU, POLICE REPORTER
August 19, 2006 10:12am

A TEENAGED boy will be the first to face new laws and tough penalties aimed at car thieves who run from police pursuits.
The 16-year-old was arrested at 10.30pm last night following a chase through Mt Barker after police spotted him driving a suspected stolen Magna.

"The driver allegedly failed to stop and police pursued the vehicle through backstreets until the driver and passenger dumped the car on Adelaide Rd,'' a police spokesman said.

The Adelaide Hills teenager was caught nearby and will face the new charge of dangerous driving to escape police pursuit, as well as illegal use of a motor vehicle and drive in a manner dangerous.

The passenger, also a 16-year-old boy from the Adelaide Hills, was arrested and charged with illegal use of a motor vehicle.

The boys were bailed to appear before a youth court at a later date.

The new law aimed at fleeing drivers was introduced on Sunday, August 13, and carries a maximum penalty of five years jail.

About time something was done to stop the little bastards. Back in the old days they used to hang horse thieves.

Good, That means they should do some time in real jail as well (not just juvie). Serves them right. I guess they still need to be sentenced first though...

The article says he will be charged with illegal use of a vehicle too, which is the nice way of saying grand theft auto :)

An alternative punishment is to hand over the offender to the owner for a few hours.

It's nice to think it will happen with the new legislation, but I bet this guy doesn't spend any time inside.

I agree about letting the owner have a piece of him though. Same should go with speedsters and drink drivers

the problem is though, tougher laws wont stop it...

i know people who went away for a few years, then back in 6 months later for the same ****. A different approach is needed somehow.
