It's not going high when idling at the lights and then coming down when driving is it?

I'd be inclined to think the sensor is having some troubles.

As Tasmaniak says ^^. Also check the wiring and the plug onto the sensor.
They can get a build up of gunk on 'em causing a bad connection.
If all else fails....replace the sensor.

Do you find it happens when you hit a bump????

Thanks guys
I thought the same so I replaced the sensor and cleaned around it and checked the wires, bumpy roads don't affect it.
It only happens once in a while sometimes it can be month or more between happenings and some times it will happen every couple of days.

Thanks
Marc

Well, if you've done that, I think you will be chasing your tail for days trying to find the fault and potentially never find it. I would be inclined to throw my hands up and accept it..... but I accept a lot of things like that. I certainly wouldn't be paying an auto elec to chase it down either.

You've eliminated the obvious...

Yeah your right I would go broke if I paid a sparky to try and find it.
I think I will throw my hands in the air and let it go.

Thanks for the ideas.

quick question, have you checked coolant? and when was the last time the system was bled? could be air in the system and when the air pocket hits it, it shows hotter than it actually is. also are you sure you replaced the right sensor? was it a single wire or dual wire?

VT have only the one sensor.

My guess would be the cluster is faulty. The cluster operates using serial data sent from the PCM which has the only connection to the CTS. If there was a poor connection between the PCM (= high resistance) and the CTS the gauge reading would drop to cold (low CTS resistance indicates hotter). Serial data is pretty reliable; it either works or it doesn't and if that failed it would also drop the gauge to cold.
