Hi there,
I would say no,
as the cooling system & engine is subject to high temperature, and extreme water pressure when hot,
I would use Gasket Cement [aka Gasket Goo, or similar] on the threads.;)
I have ALWAYS used Gasket Cement on all bolt on cooling items / accessories, and NEVER had a leak or issue ever,
Been using it for 35 years, I guess when your on a good thing, "STICK TO IT" :p

However, I do use Teflon tape on my Sump Plug when I change the oil,
Never had a oil leak ! :)
Cheaper than a Sump Plug Washer the dealers charges for every time when you put your Car in for a Service,
Where It never looks new ! o_O
because I usually suss out if I have received the service I have paid for EVERYTIME. ;)
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply the only reason I ask is that the sender uses the engine as the earth

as mentioned a little thread sealant is fine, the sender uses a tapered thread so it will seal itself also
