Howdy Everyone, I need a little advice from the experts re: airbags. I've just refitted the airbag system out of my old VS shell into the new body, and the moment has come to plug in the airbag itself (on the steering wheel). I think i've done everything correctly, but is there anyway i can "test" the system before plugging it in, i.e. checking the plug for a voltage or something? I'm just a bit concerned that i'll connect it all up and when i flip the switch the airbag will go off or something. You can tell i'm a noob at this wiring deal :)

    Thanks in advance

    OD

Havent got into it too much, but I believe there is a single yellow wire that you connect it to. I would just make sure there is no voltage on that. Let me know if that info doesnt sound right and I can check it out a bit more.

As long as its a straight swap and both bodies had a single airbag and the sensors are connected and there are no shorts then you may be OK. Hopefully the airbag light will not stay on after you reconnect the battery....make sure the key is not in the ignition.
Dunno about NSW but in Qld swapping bodies requires a lot of paperwork....and I mean lots. Good Luck.

Well, i checked it out and there is a constant 1.2 volts with the ignition on (this is at teh plug on the end of the yellow wire) so i plugged it all together, closed my eyes and crossed my fingers, and turned on the ignition, nothing happened, the abs light went out.....then came back on. Dammit! Wonder what that means, the cars still a fair way from being back together so i'll worry more about it then, unless theres a way of diagnosing such things?

Possibly the ABS light will go out once the car is rolling unless one of the many connectors isn't making proper contact. The airbag light is the one you don't want to see as resetting the light means a trip to Holden or an auto-elec.

Thanks for the tip, i'll go back over the wiring connectors before i button up the dash completely. Theres not that many so it'll be a fast job. Unfortunately we no longer have either an auto elec or a holden dealer (strange but true) in town that could diagnose it so my fingers are crossed.

Once a Air Bag fault is logged, (i.e. ignition turned on with fuse removed or blown, a wire disconnected, etc) you have to take it to holden to have the warning removed.

Bah! Deep down i suspected this would be the case. I suspect further that i won't be able to get a blue slip until this is done either. Looks like it's a trip on a car trailer to my nearest holden workshop :(

I've had the ABS light come on because of a faulty wheel sensor and once fixed light went out and all good. Check your connections to your wheel sensors etc.

Thanks Ice, but not sure what you mean by wheel sesnors? Is that inside the bit that bolts to the back of the steering wheel?

That would be my fault in my post I put ABS fault when I meant Air Bag. I have since fixed the typo. ABS faults are ok and will clear themself but Air Bag faults have to be cleared by holden.

The ABS does a self diagnosis, if you turn the key on but don't actually drive it, the module thinks there is a problem and the light comes back on. This will happen especially if the battery has been disconnected for a long period of time. Once the car goes above 6 km/h and no faults are detected, the light will go out next time you start the car.

I tested mine by getting a dumb arse in a 4WD to drive out in front of me at 80km/h, turns out my airbag doesn't work...and it hurt.
Good call testing it mate, good call.
As I am just about to get her back on the road, probably something I should look at.
