Thanks again guys for your help. Greenfoam, my 253 does have a TQ20 cam,so you think the H286 is way too big for the 253. I want something bigger than 308 2H. So what do you reckon I should put in my 253? Danny8, I would love to put a 308 in the vk, but, I just want something different. Probaly, later when I kill the 253,..LOL.... I'll put a308 in it. Just for now, I go with little 253. Plus it's stock, and I own it too. I do have another 253 but that's at .030" thou . My brother and I have a bet, A slab of JB who can build a strong 253. I just need some help with it. Danny8 hows the wagon going? Cheers Jason

standard 253 suffer the same problem as the 308 stuff all compression! first thing i would do is deck the block to 0 deck and that will give u bout 9.2 to 1, plane another .040" off the heads and make sure u run 253 head gaskets and should give a tad over 10 to 1 comp! run ya 286 cam stardard 4 barrel manifold or edelbrock performer, give ya heads a tickle with slitly oversize valves and your 600dp and thing will fly! make sure u use sum good rod bolts cause this thing will scream!

best mod on a 253 is the rope you use to hold your boat still while you are fishing.

edit* i feel kinda bad about posting this so i better go into more detail.

with the cash your lookin at spending, you are being foolish not to buy a 308 block for a couple of hundred bucks and rebuilding that. you can rebuild it while you are still driving around with your 253, then when the day comes that your ready to have some fun, drop in the 308. you dont need to change ANYthing else. trans, loom, brakes, springs, everything is the same and bolts up.

remember; the 253 was dropped from holden production because the 3.3 was more reliable, better on fuel and able to make more power.

need i say more?

It really depends wat ya wanna do with the motor tho.

My old 253 I built to rev the crap out of, put a stage 4 dynotec cam in it, Redline Maxitork intake....but that motor was a learning curve, coz it didn't even rev much over 5000rpm with the standard heads. I still got that motor out the back on the engine stand, only done a few thousand k's since a full rebuild....I'd consider selling it but u live a bit far away.

Our 308 we built up to suit dirt circuit racing. The old 253 didn't go to bad overall, but on dirt it was a slug coz of the huge cam, so coming out of corners everyone would overtake. The 308 we built we chucked the stage 2 cam in, and it's a hell of a lot better....can't say the huge improvement is just the cam tho, coz we now got Hoosiers on the back instead of street radials, and we've gone up to a 308.....but the new combo is working a treat.

Wat do ya want to build ur motor up to do?

just remember youll get all your power out of the heads and carby use a standard bottom end just some arp rod bolts and a balance, flat tops pistons,hd valve springs ,port and polish heads, what ever cam you decide to go just look at the rev range and compression for them and suit compression and stally and youll eat him alive.

this is what cam id be getting and if you wanted a high reving one id go solid but heaps of revs means breakin stuff

thanks guys for your help again.Leigh 7005 mate i think that might be toooooooooo big...lol. I don't want to break it, I would like to drive it for a while then i might break it. Then put a 308 in it. I want the motor to rev to 6200rpm. Another question, has anyone heard of a gas cam the revs are 1500 rpm to 8000rpm the motor is a 308 stock, with duel fuel. There a guy in town telling everyone about it, i never heard such thing. Cheers Jason.

I want the motor to rev to 6200rpm.

You'll need decent heads to get it revving that high. On my 253, it wouldn't rev much passed 5000rpm with the standard heads. Chucked the Yella Terra Bathurst heads on, and it hits 6500rpm easy as.
