Was just thinking that. It has to be because of the IRS, and why some people run into this issue and others don't.

I can shift into 5th and reverse without hitting the plate. I'll see if I can get the boot on and then what it looks like once I restore and fit the centre console. Have a new rare spares inset and boot for it.

Instead of riveting it I'll find some screws to hold it down.

For IRS the tail shaft centre mount is offset, if you look at the centre mount bracket it should have IRS and an arrow one one side and something else with an arrow on the other side. It should be noticeable to the eye that the the bracket is offset to one side.

I spoke too soon.

Fitted the tailshaft and it had a noticeable bend in it. Got angry and forgot to take a pic. The bracket has an "F" and arrow which I'm assuming is for Front.

Flipped the bracket around and it straightened up a lot better. However, the little tab that the handbrake cable is now on the other side and not in contact with the cable at all. Not sure how bad thats going to be.

Looking at the motor, it appears to sit straight. The sump is square with the k frame as well.

These are the pics with the bracket flipped around.

It's supposed to have that kink in it. Uni joints in axles need to have a minimum 1-2° working angle otherwise the roller elements don't move and wear out a lot faster. On a semi-trailing/live axle setup the whole diff moves up and down and creates that angle, the centre mount is also spaced down a little. For IRS cars where the diff is solid mounted there is no working angle so the centre mount is offset to the side to create the working angle across the uni-joints.

Yup, that is how it should be.

Sorry, I should have made my earlier post about the offset bracket more clear.

No problems, I'll flip it around later and post another pic.

This is the bracket facing the right way, with the arrow to the front.

Edit - I found an old pic that happened to have the tailshaft in the background, it also appears to have a slight kink in it from passenger side to diff.

Getting annoying now. Got it all together and now the car won’t start. It cranks but won’t fire.It started prior to putting the box in.

I’m thinking maybe either the distributor is damaged from the engine leaning back, or the coil wires got pinched somehow from the bellhousing.

On top of it, fluid is leaking from the output shaft seal. Damn it.

What I have done in the past is put a small (or rather thin) piece of wood between the sump and subframe so when you lower the transmission the engine can't lean to far backwards. Hopefully no major damage.

I’ll start checking for spark and injector pulse over the weekend.

Got the battery on charge as well.

Weird thing is it started perfect after I took the auto out, and the motor tilted back a fair bit then too. It’s got a brand new Bosch coil on it. Will get the borescope out tomorrow too and poke that down the back, hopefully a wire has come loose.

The knock sensor wire had snapped as well and I repaired it, but I don’t think that would prevent the car from starting.
