With the recent and untimely demise of our first X5, an insurance payout, and a little of our own cash, we decided to pick up the following:

Are you sure the centre diff is in the trans or is it in the transfer case?
I think these ones have the front shaft that runs real close to the transmission housing then there's some Mercs that the shaft runs inside the housing from memory.
So the centre diff is like an R32, 33, 34 and 35 GTR then, computer controlled torque distribution via a wet clutch.

The centre diff is the ATC 450 Transfer case which is housed on the rear of the gearbox.


The front shaft runs close to the auto housing as seen in the petrol E70 driveline below;




Yes, computer controlled multiplate wet clutch pack, the rear shaft is splined to the output shaft of the auto meaning that 100% of torque can only be directed to the front if the rear wheels have zero traction. Here's an exploded diagram of the transfer case:
