ignore the shiny links. are there 9 links when the dots are on the passanger side?

forget the dizzy for now.

if the number 1 cyl is TDC and both valves are closed (compression stroke)the next valve to open would be the exhaust valve. (suck ,push ,bang, blow).

almost sounds like it's 180degrees out?

That's how it sounds :) I'm not actually fussed, I'm just going to put it back together exactly how it came.

What I AM, is very curious to know what's going on. I'm borrowing my boss' dial indicator on Monday to see if the lift is any different - maybe I have a small aftermarket cam.

yeah going by the picture it seems the cam timing is out 180.
if you count 9 links up from yr crank gear dot it puts the dot exactly 180 out.

which pistons are at tdc with the engine sitting the way it is in the picture...
1 and 4 pistons should be at top. and cyl 4 valves should be rocking.
the crank gear is indicating that cyl 1 up but depending which knucklehead done the cam timing could mean that 4 is firing.(which is what the cam timing is saying)

makes me wonder how they got this to run properly...surely it would mean that they would have had to swap the injector plugs around so the ecu was pulsing on the correct injector.

really, that sounds odd.

so you could use the v8 delco ecu on any v8 engine with any firing order...

hey im gona jump a bit of topic here. but could you use a v8 delco ecu (reprogrammed of course) on a 4cyl. or does it have to be a 4cyl delco.

you just need a 4 cylinder memcal out of a camira for the cylinder select resistors.so it knows its running a 4 cylinder same ecu does 4 6 and 8 cylinder can run a 1 cylinder on it if you have the know how

all the injectors are wired on a common circuit so thats not a issue either

last timing chain I fit & set up it was 180 out when set up. thats just how they are for some reason, set it all up as your sepposed to, then turn it over 180 an set your dizzy up to #1 plug. Completely went beyond all reason at the time, but thats how it worked.
So sounds like your timing is set up right

and the shiney links will line up with the dots again, but it takes so many rotations to get back to that point you'd give up. Pretty much when installing the chain is the only time you'll see them line up with the dots on the gears.

(last one I fit was a few years back & on a VB commodore, but all 5.0lt are same timing setup)
