lol i have had 5% all around on my vx right, and it was so god damn black during nite like you couldnt possible see anything outside except the cars with their lights on lol, no people no nothing. So what i did was i went to the place where i got it tinted and i RETINTED only front doors because around corners at nite i couldnt see s**t.

I live in Queensland Gold Coast and on a saturday nite i decided to go out to broadwater carpark (where all cars gather around). Unlucky for everyone cops have blocked both ways out of the carpark and they were breathalising (cant spell) everyone and checking their cars for defects ofcouse. Now, he pulled me over, i blew in the thing i was 0.00 and he had a torch in his hand, and he was checking the car and then he pointed to the back window with the torch and he goes "WOW how dark is that mate", lol and i go ohh yeah 5%, then he goes thats illigal did you know that, so i was like no i didnt blah blah.

then he took some random blue torch with a blue card, i opened the door, so what he did is he put the card on one side of the window and turned on the torch from theother, and he goes "mate i cant even see the card at all". so i was talkin to him for another 10 mins and he goes i'll let you off this time but if i catch you here again im gonna have to give you a fine, which would be $75 + 1 point (bastards).

But the thing is he didnt give me any notification or a card like that i have to change it, so what i did is i went to the guy that did my windows and he goes mate dont worry about it, he got you only because you went where cops will find anything to fine yah, so i DID NOT end up changing my windows lol, i still have 20% front doors and 5% back doors and rear.

This all happend about 2 1/2 months ago and i've been sweet after that lol

just thought id share it with you, hope you learn not to get 5% all around lol because you wont see anything hehe, its awsome during day but very dangerous at nite

    cheers

    alex.

Interesting. After reading that last post I had to just add my two cents worth.
I can't quote the exact rules and regs, but as far as I was aware and have read over the years, the front side windows can't be any darker than 35% here in QLD, but it is fair game on the back side windows and rear window...one glaring reason for this would be why don't they prosecute ute owners who stick canopies on the back of their ute...they have effectively blocked most of thier rear vision and any "side" vision they may have had by looking out the rear window of the ute. Vans are another point, as are tradesmans utes where they are that stacked with gear that they may as well not have a rear window in the cab at all...all the side vision these vehicles have is what they can see through those two front side windows.
Yeah, I totally agree...5% is just stupid on the front windows... :b:

I'm pretty sure the front windows in a sedan or s/wagon are subject to a certain maximum, but the rear passenger side windows are not subject to any limits and neither are the side windows in the boot of the s/wagon.

I say this, because I've seen a lot of Police Landcruisers with tinted windows that are normal tint on front side windows and rear doors, but are very dark on the others.

It would very, hypocritical if the Police were booking people for having the same tinting as they have themselves.

Another example is that I have seen Ambulance Troop Carriers in Vic, NSW & Qld with super dark tinting on the side windows, but the front doors are lighter tint.

Plus, with panel vans, some come ex factory with windows, some don't. I've seen quite a few used as Food Transport Vehicles with the fibreglass interior lining which totally obscures the side windows, so I can't imagine there being any limitations to side window tint, if they are allowed to be totally blocked out by another substance.

I had an XF P/van and deliberately had the side windows done with super dark tint to make it harder for people to see inside and had the barn door windows dark done with the same tint as the front door windows, but also had internal blinds on the barn doors. I went through dozens of RBT sites in it day and night and never had a single comment. I even had the Vic Police Roadworthy Inspection guys check it over (along with just about every other vehicle trying to get on the island) on the way to the Phillip Island Grand Prix without any comment. The guy walked around it, saw the nice new tyres, checked the rego label, asked when was it last serviced, I told him the day before at the Ford Dealer who also did new pads and rotors all round and the shockers were done last service, all of which was true. He got me to pop the bonnet, took a quick look at the engine bay (steam cleaned the day before too) and he said, "Looks well maintained and in good condition, see later mate, enjoy the race."

No mention about the tint at all.

Plus in Victoria the Dog Squad have much darker tint on the 4 side windows of their Station Wagons than on the 2 front side windows.

It's not an issue I've bothered with before, but I'll have look into it now as it has sparked my curiosity.

Check with your insurance company aswell. I know that my insurance company (SGIO) wouldn't honor a claim if I had less than 35% ... so yeah just double check hey.

Dude are you insured? If you are, you may as well stop paying your premiums, cause you are uninsured and wasting your money. Your insurance company will reject any claim as the car is unroadworthy.

As for the WRX, as you were the installer, look out when the owner's insurance knocks him back on a claim, cause he is going to come after and probably sue you because you knew it was illegal and should never have fitted it.

It's a huge noose to have around your neck man, just waiting to be yanked tight!

:my: Good god....I'm glad I don't drive on the same roads as that guy at night....ever tried driving along at night and turning on your interior lights? It kills your night vision and everything outside goes even darker and you can't see a damn thing...

Man, if it is a choice between being cool and being wrapped around a lamppost or dead, I think I'll be Mr Uncool.... :yeah:

interesting to note - when I transferred the car from Qld to SA due to job relocation. SA transport dept classed my tint illegal during the inspection. They let me off under one condition, that is if I get pulled over by the coppers. I will have to rip the tint off on the spot! Thought Bugger that! I have kept the tint on:)

well lets be realistic here, 35% is nothin, i mean my front windows are 20% and rest is 5%, but there is a huge difference at nite between em, like during day when ur lookin at the car u wont see much, but yeah at night there is from the inside, on 5% you cannot see anything lol, just the lights :), and yes i have also tryed driving with the roof light on and let me tell yah its bad lol, i mean its so hard i cant even describe it lol :)

Best place to get windows tinted

I need to get my windows tinted, I've got a Vt and live in melbourne.
Where is the best place for price & quality???

TRY Tint-A-Car in Oakleigh (http://www.tintacar.com.au/),...ask and they will usually offer a discounted price. They have been around for a number of years.

I would like mine done at some stage and would be very cautious going with any other of the smaller companies out there - too many inferior tint products.

The Tint Professor (http://www.tintprofessor.com.au) is also another of the biggers names...someone I know has used them, but I havn't actually seen the tint. They apparently offer free courtesy car.

Whatever you do, don't go cheap on a tint,....there are lots of nasty peeling purple tints on the road...

    Cheers

The tint Professor have a deal for $265.00 is that all right??

Looks like a good price...you will find that they will be a little cheaper now considering it is the 'off season' still. Tint a Car may match that price if that is the decider.

You can prob go down and check out some of the work they have just completed. That would give you the best idea of what sort of job they do.

Alright. The person I know got his from the TP and got a 'special' for $250. He has gone back once due to the film not reaching the top of the window and now has a bubble down the lower of another window. Make ur own judgment call on this one, but I would probably be heading to TAC instead, eventhough it may have just been the installer and not necessarily the product.
