Long time reader, first time poster.

Got a chance to get a VK Berlina for a good price as my first car - since up till now I've only ever driven around my dad's Suzuki Alto I'm pretty keen to go for it.

However, I'm pretty sure there might be something suss about it mechanically and I know sweet #### all about engines, so I'm a bit uncomfortable about it (Especially since if it turns out to be munted I wouldn't even be able to afford to get it fixed) even though it's a really good price.

Should I just go for it? I reckon I could probably learn to fix it up myself if it is munted, although I wouldn't know where to start.

Get a mechanical inspection done if you're unsure - 'munted' could mean spending more than you paid for the car in repairs - especially at that age. Even your family mechanic should be willing to give it a quick look over if nothing else. If you're on a budget, "if it seems to good to be true", then it probably aint. On the other hand, it might just need one or two things replaced or done to it and it might be OK.

You'd want to be sure about the bodywork/chassis as rust is almost a certainty. Oil leaks can be the signal that something more serious is a problem. Even the wheels are worth looking over (under the covers) - see if they're damaged or rusted. A new set of wheels and tyres might just be more than you're willing to fork out for.

Depends what you want. If you want a car to play with, make sure its straight and rust free. Drivelines are a dime a dozen.

If you want a reliabe daily. look elsewhere
