Hi guys, I decided to clean my throttle body to see if its fix the rough idle. Can some one tell me how to get the accelerator cable off and also the cruise control cable as well??? They seem hard to get off and I'm too afraid I'll break the plastic bit at the end of these two cables as I need to drive the car straight after it done so don't wanna make any mistakes. If there is a thread somewhere here that answers my question please point me to that. Thanks.
accelerator is easy, it just pulls off...its kind of like a horseshoe that snaps on around a small ball on the bracket. so pull it at the joint toward the firewall and it'll come off. the cruise is harder, you need to turn the bracket of the throttle so its in wide open throttle position then slide the plastic piece on the cruise cable backwards off the ball holding it. it'll be a little tricky, but just keep it at WOT and play around till it slides off....or get a torch and see where the opening on the plastic piece of the cruise cable is and you can see where you need to slide it off.
Yeah got it off finally!!! Just little bit of fiddling around. The cruise control cable is a b!tch to get off. I couldn't believe how much gunk have been deposited in there, theres this thick black stuff around the butterfly and the wall of the throttle body. Cleaned it all out will let you know if this fixed the rough idle problem. Thanks a lot!!
hmmm, what is happening exactly and what rpm does it idle at? also when were the plugs, leads and fuel and air filter last changed? if its not a airflow problem it's most likely a fuel supply or spark issue, but it'll help to know what is happening and whether it idles rough all the time....another thing, are there any fault codes logged and is the fuel economy ok?
I checked the fault codes and it came up 12 which I assume nothing is wrong. The sparkies and the leads have changed about 4000K's ago (all at once). On my tacho - the idle rpm seems to be at 600-rpm?! I use BP Ultimate and still yet to try Nulon Injector cleaner(Bought it yesterday). I used K&N airfilter and its clean. (filter is not that old) My car done nearly 220,000kms, and due for a minor service in two weeks time, so hopefully it goes ok after the service. I'm suspecting it could be the coil packs??
code 12 means that everything is fine....but not everything logs a code. 600rpm is way too low to idle at....its been i while since my car was stock-ish so i cant remember, but i think a normal idle should be about 900rpm. (mine idles at about 1200rpm, buts thats another story) before you change the coil packs run the injector cleaner and give your car an absolute work out, whenever safe/feasable give it some WOT to clean out the fuel system and injectors. when you get the service have the coil packs tested with a multimeter to see if they are working as per normal.
Just say if it is the coil packs, then how much will it cost to get a new one?? I heard that they quite expensive!!! So I can start saving up if they needed to be replaced within the next two weeks(After service).
If its only due for a minor service, give it a go yourself. Save yourself some $ and get to know you car better. Guessing coil packs is really only a stab in the dark. There are many things that will give it a rough idle, more often than not leads/spark plugs. Cleaning the throttle body is a good thing to do, but doesn't fix the rough idle problem very often. I would be going to each spark plug lead and making sure they are all really tight on the spark plug. It will only take a minute to check them all. They shouldn't have much play on the spark plug, and shouldn't come off with a small tug. You can try resetting the computer to. To do this, just remove the 20A engine fuse near the battery for 10 seconds. More than likely it wont help, but a good thing to know how to do.
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I was thinking to service it myself as its only the oil filter and a new oil. But I want to know the process of changing the oil??? I know how to drain the oil but I want to add a different type of engine oil so do I have put in the oil flush fluid after draining it or before draining the old oil out while the engine is running?? I got confused with the instruction on the oil flush bottle - it didn't state whether to drain the oil first or not before add the oil flush and whether to keep the engine running.
never turn the engine on once the sump plug has been take off...never. there's no oil to protect and lubricate all the internal moving parts once the oil has drained out. quite frankly unless your oil at the moment is in really bad shape when you drain it i wouldnt bother flushing, the bulk of all the oil will drain out when the sump plug is undone...anything remaining will just be a fine coat.
Thanks, yeah the oil isn't too bad so I won't be flushing it with the oil flush fluid. So gonna do it on the first day of 2007!!! (Monday):yeah: Happy New Year guys!!!! Drive safely. Oh by the way sircruisealotVS, you got hell of a nice car!!! Will get a body kit for my car soon after I fix up some little problems on her first.
