Hi Guys My VS has recently developed a thumping noise from the bottom end/rear end of the block. It only seems to occur after the engine has been run for around 10 minutes. I can feel the thump through the floor/pedals but its only really noticeable when the car is idling, it seems to disappear while I am moving. At first I thought it could be caused by my dying harmonic balancer but replaced that today and that made no difference. The last oil change I changed the type of oil I have been running to Castrol Edge Sport & some nulon engine flush and before I was running Penrite full mineral oil (the problem started to occur around 800km after the change of oil type) Any ideas? The engine still goes just as hard and doesn't seem to be idling rough and fuel economy hasn't changed.
I have had it up on ramps and have gone over most of the undercarriage of the car and can't seem to pin point it.
Sounds like a part of the engine hitting the body....maybe due to a sagged/broken engine mount. If the engine is high mileage (300K+) then maybe it is the balance shaft. Edit....when engine mounts sag badly and the rubber is gone, then mount then is metal to metal with a solid thump thump thump.
Turns out the engine is disintegrating Did an oil change today and down the bottom of the oil pan was lots of little metal flakes Sigh, new engine time it looks
