Hi all. Is it legal to tow an Unregistered 4x4 on one of those front 2 wheel dolly trailers that allow the rear wheels of the towed vehicle to travel on the road ?

I believe I have seen it done in Qld but with a number plate and light board attached to the vehicle being towed.

I would think the decision would be with your State Registration/Transport Authority.

Thanks for the reply . I was mainly interested in towing an unregistered vehicle without the heavy car trailer . Just using a small two wheel dolly trailer would bring the total weight down to allow my Commodore and tow bar to pull a legal weight . The rear lights of the vehicle would be wired to the existing trailer plug on the car . I can't find any specific info on this kind of towing on the NSW RTA site.

Not an expert and don't live in NSW.. but wouldn't that mean you are then effectively towing an unregistered trailer?

I know tow trucks do it but I would assume they have a license for the purpose.

Tow trucks can do it as they are licensed to do so.
I am fairly sure that it would have to be put on a trailer.

That is very helpful thank you. It does not say anything about the towed vehicle needing to be registered. It also says you need a letter of permission from the Authority to tow a vehicle without a licenced driver in the towed vehicle. I would say that the letter may be issued after they inspect the tow setup, possibly with a rigid tow system and coming into weight restrictions you don't need a driver in the towed vehicle .
I will print that out and go down to my Rego office and see if it can be done.
