Hope someone has the forethought to make a decent documentary or some other historical record of the last Holden/Ford/Toyotas built in this country. Lots of footage of them being built etc. Interviews with the ex-workers.
Also they don't just shred all the records.

I mean something for the guys twenty plus years down the track with their restored Commodores to get glassy eyed over.
Imagine a detailed colour version of how they built the GTHO or the Monaros back in the early seventies....
Instead most are a mish mash of various footage put together well after they were gone.

I mean a serious car nut putting a proper doco together with restorers in mind.

There's plenty of notice being given of the closures so heaps of time to put something together.
And it's not like Ford's going to steal any secrets now.

So big question is - will the last aussie mass produced car be a toyota camry, toyota aurion, holden commodore, calais, ute or cruze?

There are films about cars getting developed on youtube, there is a doco about how the VE was built and another about how the VB was developed. eg.....

Havent read the article however to say any one entity is to blame is just stupid. There is no doubt union inflexibility contributed to Toyota's demise however there were many many other factors at play which significantly contributed.

Some of the other things though were general productivity and excess spending. Things like the massive 21 day holiday over christmas reduced to 8. The sheer amount of allowances for meals and travel if you had to do overtime - which you had plenty of notice for.

The problem is there was no lets meet up and talk about it, it was just shot down.

From my understanding there was a "lets meet up and discuss", however, the unions wanted 50+ reps on site to do this, Toyota refused and that is what kick started the court injunction side of things. I am only basing this on a floor worker who is a part of the union due to force. He said it was pretty rabid inside. Oh and for a year 9 drop out who has no real job title, his 95k PA salary isn't too shabby.

As for the allowances, if the company provides the mask, why does there need to be an allowance? If the company does not provide one and you need one why can you not be like every other worker and come tax time make a deduction for it?
