Vr acclaim
The t700 should bolt straight up, I kno the older 308s and 304s (vl) werent interchangeable as they where either trimatic or turbo bolt pattern, in my vl inhad a 307 with a trimatic but adapted a turbo 700 with a shift kit and loved it, if u can use the t700 go for it and use the extra $ for a decent service,

VR's run a 4L60E transmission not a T700. T700 uses a kickdown cable where as the 4L60E is electronically controlled. If you're swapping a 4L60E for a 4L60E it'll bolt straight up and plug straight in. If you are swapping to a T700 you'll need to connect the kickdown cable to the throttle body and I'm fairly certain you'll need to do something with the computer. Someone else here will no more about the computer side of things with a conversion like that.

Regardless of anything else you should always run a trans cooler with the T700 or 4L60E. Especially if you plan on towing, modifying the trans (like the shift kit) or running a hi stall converter. They'll add quite a bit of time to the life span of your trans and keep the oil much nicer between servicing. Run the trans cooler in series with the factory cooler and dont be afraid to run a couple of extra coolers if you can spend the money on it.

Yeah, you need a VS specific auto trans at that. Second hand wreckers specail starts at $1100. Rebuild about $2000.

Its cheaper and easier to convert to manual IMO. Been there done that.

$1650 to convert to a T5 using a falcon 6cyl T5 and a CRS conversion kit. Which will give you everything you need including the clutch.

lol lucky i checked this morning.i almost bought the t700. thanks for all the info guys....i have seen manual conversion kits over here soop (nz) there just a bit out of my price range start around 2.5k over here and wife said i can only have 1500 lol.
Anyway i have another week off so ill take trans out and perhaps take it to town to a freind and see how rooted it is , or take it to scrapyard and swap it for some beers as another freind owns the scrap yard.
i would like manual no doubt about it, as wife would never drive it then .
any other info to do with that conversion soop?
thanks again brothers and i hope your all safe and dry over there in oz....thoughts are with you all...stay safe
peace ,jamie

If you're mechanically minded you can always have a crack at a doing a rebuild yourself. Rebuild kits from the USA are pretty cheap even with postage and you can pick up some heavy duty/performance parts at a good price too. Best thing to do if you want to have a crack at rebuilding it yourself (and if you can get by without your car for a couple of weeks) is to pull the transmission out and pull it down so you can see what needs to be replaced. Clean and check each hard part (Gears, Sprags, Pistons, etc) for damage and then order yourself a rebuild kit & whatever parts (if any) you need to replace to do the rebuild. More often than not transmission failures can be attributed to failed seals or burnt out clutches, all of which are replaced in a rebuild. Generally if a hard part fails it's a quick, noisy and total death of the transmission.

You may also want to take the opportunity to upgrade the transmission with updated and improved parts like the 5 planet gearset, pinless accumulators, diamond weight governor, 'beast' sun shell, etc. Or you could fit performance orientated parts like a shift kit or corvette servo. There are heaps of options, check out the CT Powertrain store on ebay.com for an idea of whats around for these transmissions.

You can get away with doing the job without any speciality tools if you've got a bit of creativity or you can take it to a transmission specialist to get them to do the few things you might not be able to, only thing I've had to get done is have 4 teflon seals fitted for me on the input shaft (I'm doing a T700 but they're mostly the same except for the valve body which has the electronics in it). This site 700-R4 Rebuild has some good tips on doing a rebuild.

I've recently managed to get hold of a copy of GM's Technician Guide for the 4L60E which is pretty detailed and has anything and everything you'd ever want/need to know about these boxes and how they're made. PM me if you want me to send it to you (pdf file). I also have a few other guides and videos you might find helpful.

vs clubsport
The 4L60e on my vs clubsport is on its way out. The gears are starting to slip and not much fun to drive. Was already looking at a transgo stage 2 shift kit with corvette servo (1st to 2nd), thats now changed to a full rebuild. I have a budget of $2500 and wanted to check with you guys what the build consists of aside from replacing the bands/seals etc as i dont want to get robbed by the local trans shop. Also if anyone knows a reputable transmission shop in sydney i would appreciate it, Cheers.

The rebuild will also include filter, bushings, clutches and fluid. A good rebuild will also see them replace damaged/worn hard parts and install any updated hard parts like sprags, gear sets, sun shell, pistons, etc. I'd still get your shift kit and servo installed with the rebuild too.
