Hi,

When the car is at 80km, it surges when it shifts up a gear, quite a hard surge actually.
Reading around the forum, I would guess that I have stuffed the clutch in the auto.
It would be completely my fault for not doing transmission services frequently enough.

So does anyone know how much it would be, approximately, to get it repaired? Or should I just find another at a wreckers??

Regards,
Craig

Could it be a bad solenoid. Instead of wasting money on a transmission get it checked, when was the filter and fluid last replaced, changing the pressure plates are not hard to do. Sounds like its your torque converter locking up maybe fluid related due to blocked filter or burnt clutch.

I changed the fluid and filter yesterday. But to be honest I don't remember when I last changed the transmission fluid. It was not a good sight in the pan. Metal flecks and sludge in the bottom of the pan.
Yep, I really screwed up.
I am guessing that I burnt the clutch, I looked at some videos on YouTube for the 4L60E transmission and yea, that is more of a specialist job.

Cheers.

Little bits be normal that's why they have a magnet, sludge no good, lack of fluid flow for those little valves. See how it goes, might be worth giving it another fluid dump if its better.

True, I don't know what is "normal". It was quite a while since I changed the fluid, so a build up could be normal, but not as noticeable if the fluid is changed at correct intervals.
It has had an easy life, apart my bad servicing, never towed anything, never flogged it.
I have enough fluid to do another change.
However I was under the impression that because of the metal particles means that the clutch is stuffed and the metal particles are the only thing making the clutch grip. Not sure if that is true or not, just what I have read.
Happy to be wrong.
I just don't want to be driving and all of a sudden the transmission craps itself and it's like being in neutral.
Just to let people know, the wreckers wants $350 for a "change-over" transmission and $430 to pull the old one out / service the one from the wreckers and install it.

Very cool vids. And quite interesting.......of course, way out of my league. Reminds me of disassembling laptops.
It just reinforces the idea that I have stuffed the transmission.

Get it checked for fault codes before you decide to purchase another transmission.

What pressure plates are you talking about.
