My VZ's auto transmission has some slackness or lash - not sure of the correct terminology here, that shows up as bit of a thump as it moves up through the gears, as if the drive shaft has started spinning up, but the machinery between there and the back wheels get that power belatedly. Transmission oil is up to the required mark so its not that, so does anyone know what causes transmission lash, and what can be done about it? thanks John
Really? Now that wasn't an answer I expected, and I'm very hopeful that is the answer! I was really expecting something to do with the transmission being buggered or adjusting the bands etc. Where are the shift solenoids located? Within the transmission? plug into the side? thanks John
No - same all the time. I notice it most when powering out of a corner, when presumably it is shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, with a noticeable thump rather than a clunk. I followed some other links I found here, both to a supplier and basic details on where it is, which I gather means dropping the sump to gain access. The supplier recommends replacing both solenoids, which at $37 each is a no brainer, and buying a service kit which looks like a filter unit and a sump gasket. All up about $100 which is a cheap fix, if somewhat tedious to do. Did you do yours? If so, were the solenoids obvious once you got the sump off?
Yes once you drop the sump the solenoids were there, they are very simple. I don't think you can go wrong. If you feel in doubt take it to a trans place.
