Thsat could be considered normal - in traffic the fans will only turn on when the gauge reaches about 3/4 then will cool to 1/4. If moving without stopping the gauge may stay on 1/2....maybe more information is required.

Is it a series one or two VS? The series two has a two stage fan...
Before i had a major service on my car, the temp guage would rarly hit half way unless i was sitting in traffic in Drive gear. or a hot day.

I had a service last week, and a new temp sensor put it, and after ten mins of driving, the guage reads half...

So, this leads me to think these guages are somewhat dodgey.

Your's might be buggered. but i'm no mechanic.
But like hako said, this could be normal, i just don't know what normal is anymore....

i just replaced my thermostate today and now the temp gauge goes up to half then back to 1/4 when driving, before it only went to 1/4 unless idling in traffic where it went to 3/4 then down to 1/4
