Pretty sure levering them up is the only way to go.

Apply some heat and use a little screw driver with a fine flay blade.
I wouldn't be worried about breaking them, have you ever used the handle.

thanks all for all responses - yep wil have a go with heat & a finer flat screwdriver (anyone else done this?) & yes handles go up & down ok
