Hi all, This is my first post of this forum but I gotta say that in the time I have been a member I have gained some invaluable information, it really is just incredible what you can pick up on this forum. Anyway, my first question that I haven't been able to get an answer from sorting through the forum. I have a 1996 VS Commodore Berlina that (at the moment) is totally stock but when I fill it up, to the first click off point thing and I check on the digital readout on the trip computer of how many litres there are in the tank (by holding down the set button when it is showing avg fuel usage) it shows that I have between 61 and 63ltr's and I'm sure this can't be right as I thought the tank was only 59ltr. It normally takes about 54ltr to fill and that is doing it a little while after the warning light comes on if this is any help. The calibration for that readout is set to the default of 0. I have been reluctant to adjust this down to 59ltr as I'm not sure whether it is supposed to show between 61 and 63ltr when its full or not? So I hope this makes at least a little sense to someone and that hopefully someone can shed some light onto this. Thanks again for this great resourse.
hey mate how ya goin i have a vslll ute and my fuel gauge is out as well but i soon found out that there is 2 type of tanks for the vs there i the 63ltr tank and the 80ltr tank but i dont hink there is a 59ltr tank and also i wouldt trust the digital readouts sometimes because they can be out by a bit as well i have been told
the tank is a 63 L but the surface area on the bottom of the tank will hold 5L just to get 1mm of mesurment its possible there is approx 10L still in your tank apon filling. from what i am lead to beleve thet the fuel light will come on with between 5 and 10L depending on the car i guess
The "VS series owners handbook" produced by GMH and supplied with every new VS model in the glovebox states: Sedan 59 litres or, depending on model, 73 litres Wagon 68 litres Ute 63 litres Pretty sure the 73 litres is the long range tank.
Hi guys, thanks for the quick replies. Refering to the above quote, does that mean that in the handbook Holden say the tank is only 59ltr because that is the usable amount?
God only knows what holden writes in there books......from what i know the tanks are the same as the vr and vp tanks which are 63L also dosnt mean 63L will fit in the tank..... edit: vs stock sedans have, Sedan 59 litres or, depending on model, 73 litres Wagon 68 litres Ute 63 litres thanks to hako.....
if there is an 80ltr tank out there, which model VS is it fitted with? bcoz i have a VS sI stato and i split my tank and needed to replace it, but the straps dont quite fit around my new VS one, maybe statos come with a bigger tank as to the commodore? bcoz of this i think my fuel guage is out also..
the 80 85 L tanks were fitted to v8's form memory also statesman and optioned calais but im not 100% on this vr only i think
yea 1 of the mechanics at work said that holden did bring out some of the series 3 vs utes with the 80ltr tanks he couldnt remember about the vrs and that but i think they are pretty much the same
Same but different! Hi, The fuel tanks in the earlier Commodores were 14gallons, or 63.6L. With the VS, Holden changed the capacity to 59L, but did not change the tank. This was meant to fit in with the recommendation to only fill to the first click at a medium fill rate. The owners manual did allow drip filling to the full 14 gallon capacity, but only if you were going to drive at least 50 km straight away. The long range tank I believe was 17.5 gallons, or 79.6L. For the same reason, this was relisted as 73L in the VS. Same thing has probably occurred with the VE, as I have already put 75L in the supposedly 73L tank. Unless the petrol station was short delivering!
Holden VS Service Manual on CD says that VS tanks carry over from the VR II models (not sure about the VR I models): Fuel Tank Capacity: Sedan 63 litres Station Wagon 68 litres Utility 64 litres Sedan Optional & V8 Sedan Standard Tank 75 litres Statesman & Caprice 75 litres
Well in the vs calais SII i can use up about 70+ litres. When the fuel light goes out you have 8L left in the tank. so it could be a 59L but it will hold more than 59L im pretty sure the 59L tank will hold max 63L as the car shows you. You can probably fill it to 55 - 59 but there is always fuel in there. It will never be bone dry.
If you are a series one sedan from memory its 59 litres. My Berlina was a series one, and whilst the tank capacity was 59 litres, you could keep trickle filling for a bit, and you would end up with up to 63.5 litres showing on the digital readout, so essentially you have filled the tank right up, and then probably up the the filler neck a bit too, no harm done if you are driving a long distance straight away. I didn't make a habit of it, but filling it up to this point would actually make the fuel gauge go several mm above the F mark!
