Hi, i have been using the old mans VE SV6 company car for the last 2 weeks, as he has been overseas and he wants rack up the Kms cause he hates it so much....but thats another story. Anyway, im finding for a reasonably new vehicle, its trip computer is well, ****. It has range till empty, average consumption and thats about it. I know in earlier models you can access other options in the trip computer by holding dowm certain buttons, is the VE the same?
Yes when you push the trip button on the steering wheel you'll get to 'Customise menu'. Push the left scroll wheel (the one you use to change radio stations or tracks on a CD) and it will go into the menu. You need to push it when the screen highlights 'Press 'enter' for menu' or soemthing like that. I'm not at my car so I can't exactly remember what it says. Navigate through the menu to find the item on what statistics you want displayed like (Distance to empty or digital speedometer, etc) Apart from that there really isn't much to it, it's just a simple read out that gives you supplementry info. Don't get too worked up on it.
Certain options havent been activated yet, just do the above & you'll be set. All that can be shown is: avg fuel/spd odo/dist travelled dist to empty overspeed stopwatch km to go & time left digital speedo Thats on the VZ SV6, VE SV6 maybe different
Yep, cool, i have found these, it must be the same on the VE as the VZ. Its weird it does not have instant l/100km like most other cars these days though
nar for a VZ (sorry not sure on VE's), you should be able to activate the instantaneous fuel reading by pressing & holding both 'mode & set' at the same time when turning the key over. just cycling through it all & it will come up. Not the best looking feature when you use it & damn annoying since you have to constantly be holding them buttons when starting the car but it does exist.
Hold the enter button (push and hold the left scroll button down) and start it. You can access a whole heap of other options.
wow thanks trident! I just tried that on the VE (press and hold left scroll click + trip button on ve models) It very interesting, has a whole range of items from instant fuel, instant battery voltage, current coolent temp, throttle %, etc etc. its great
You don't need to hold the trip button down too. As I posted earlier you just need to hold the enter (left scroll button) down while starting the car. But you are right, there is a lot of interesting stuff in there. I think holding the trip button (by itself) while starting it will reset the service reminder warning.
Cluster Upgrade? In the past, the method of getting full trip computer functionality has been to upgrade the cluster to a higher specification, i.e. three window cluster. I have done that to my VS II and VY II. In the case of the VS, it took some re-wiring in addition to the parts. In the case of the VY, it was just a cluster change and a TECH2 re-programming. When I bopught the VE, I looked into doing the same. However, for "security" reasons, Holden now tie the cluster to the particular VIN number. The days of buying a second hand up-spec cluster appear to be over, i.e. once the cluster has been tied to the VIN, it will never work in a different car. In addition, you no longer can sell your old cluster to offset the cost of the up-marker cluster. I thought that it would still be possible to but a brand new cluster and install it. One dealer said that they would give it a go at a cost of $1,500 with no guarantee that it would work. A second dealer said that it is not possible. Now logic tells me that it must be possible, because dealers need the capability to replace defective clusters. So I have not yet given in, but are waiting till I see that someone has resolved all issues (and the price returned to a reasonable level) before going ahead. Dr Rob has advised that he will have the capability to program a cluster change soon. Patience is a virtue. As it is, the trip computer in my VE SV6 is far less practicable than I would like.
Well I agree with you, surely they should be able to change the cluster some how. The trick would be in reprogramming the cluster to suit I would think. What is gunna happen in 10 years time when a cluster stops working or is faulty? Throw the car away because you can't get another speedo for it? I hope not, would be interesting to see how you go. Keep us updated.
Ok. 1) 5 speed auto has a mind of its own. For instance, going down hills it will drop back gears, but if you accelerate once at the bottom, it holds the same gear unless he goes into manual mode. I have found this also. 2) transmission makes some very odd whining noises chnaging down. 3) Blind spots are horrible. Rear wing is to big. The pillars are also very fat both front , middle and back. makes changeing lanes interesting 4) He has had it lowered by holden at delivery and is as rough as guts. 5) Interior rattles and body kit rattles drive him insane.
hmm fair enough about the pillars and wing but things to maybe consider 1. i think this is todo with the tuning, its meant to give you a more sporty feel, ie, holds gears longer going out of corners, and drops back to assist engine braking, if the car is in sports shift this is meant to be normal operation 2, cant say ive expieranced, but not saying it isnt there 3, agree, are chunky, but its in the interests of a safer car, rear wing has been changed now to a slimmer design 4, well thats how it goes really, standard rides quite well, 5, have noticed some small rattles occasionly, but it may be made worse by point 4.
Has the SV6 had it's spoiler slimmed down? It was the smaller of the two original spoilers to begin with... I'm pretty sure the SS uses a smaller spoiler as standard now too. Are they both the same now?
The old man is just a sook. He did not even take one for a test drive, he saw it, liked it, got it, so its his own fault. Also the gear box issue above does it in standard mode, not sports mode. The car is at bout 90thou now, so 10 more he gets a new one. He took a G6E? Ford (its the turbo model) for a test drive the other week while away, he loved it and wants one now
Very interesting thread. I just tried holding the select button in on my SSV whilst starting and sure enough engineering mode popped up. There are two questions arising from this 'discovery': 1) is there anyway to make some of those options (like instant fuel) available in the normal display? 2) why would my oil life be 0% when it was fully serviced only a 1000 or so k's ago?
