I had the P0016 code and wasted alot of time looking for electronic issues, believe the trouble code.
( camshaft position sensor (CMP) for bank 1, which detects camshaft rotation, is not corresponding to the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) signal.)
I changed crank sensor (behind the starter motor). I couldn't get the cam sensor out of the front cover. I also checked wiring loom with no change to code.
After removing timing cover I found the tensioner had disintegrated, and the now loose timing chain was eating thru the mounting bracket and the timing chain had jumped 2 teeth, car appeared to be running just fine. I'm glad I didn't ignore the trouble code as the chain had worn too.
I'm told the tensioner breaking is very common and if your lucky it just falls in the sump, I wasn't. But the chain would be very loose and slap around.

Note: Timing out by 2 teeth. ( which is the cause of the P0016 trouble code)
It is a prick of a job removing the oil pump pickup bolt (and even worse putting it back in without removing oil pan but it can be done.
Watch this link below (even harder in a Commodore, I had to use a mirror to see it and a wire to hold the bolt.)
LS Timing chain removal from ATD Garage

New cam gears, chain and damper block fitted trouble code gone.

I didn't replace the tensioner instead I used a damper block (top right) so no parts to break. :)

just note that u will have part of the old tensioner sitting in the sump if u didnt find the spring metal piece ? also there shouldnt be enough slack to jump teeth so not sure how it jumped 2 teeth or it was already like that, all the tensioner does is stop the decel flapping of the chain
