My lovely wife, tired after a hard week's work, accidentally filled the tank on our 2017 Colorado with premium unleaded petrol. Probably 60 odd litres.

Not realising the mistake, she commenced driving. After 80 kms, the motor started sputtering and coughing and stopped.

I can claim the repairs against my insurance policy but I'd be interested to know how terminal the damage would be. The term 'catastrophic' comes to mind...

one of our State Managers at work did that earlier this year
(back early Feb preCovid) 98ULP instead of the oily stuff

it stopped, he got towed to a Holden dealer... the quote was ugly
nearly $5k... apart from getting all ULP out of the fuel system
basically that included replacement of pumps, diesel filters, whole
injection setup (ULP eats the seals apparently) oh... and a
6 week wait for parts (why? coz lots of people do this)

He was lucky there was no engine damage as he had about 50% diesel
when the PULP went in. But a VERY low diesel tank level and then you fill it with ULP?
Ouch...I would think

We claimed on our car fleet insurance and the State Manager
paid the excess

Good Luck..

Yes, my evil practice of using all the fuel and letting my wife refill it has bitten me on the bum....

How was the car when you got it back? Did it go alright?

My main concern is that this happened in mid November and I reckon the way local mechanics are booked out, I'll be lucky to get the car back before Feb next year.....

it has been fine since we got the car back from the dealer...

mind you for the $ and the wait, you would reckon it should :)

.. this waiting for parts is going to do my head in
we bought a NSW company last year, had a fleet of 5 Captivas
I traded 4 in as we bought cars for reps in NSW and kept one for
our IT guy (as his VE wagon was well over due)

that ONE Captiva had a history (as i found out) of.. stopping.
Anywhere, any time.. it just shuts down. Engine, instruments, electrical
pow.. like flicking the off switch

I brought it down to Vic... spoke to the DP and service Manager
at our local dealer where we buy most of the fleet, could they fix it?

yes...and 20 weeks for an entire Captiva wiring/canbus/system
to arrive from Thailand. 6 weeks to remove everything (I mean ALL electricals)
and
yup.. it was fixed. but 20 weeks wait for parts? :(

The damage has already been done so expect to see a very costly repair, 5 figure repair as a friend found out

Basically the complete high pressure side of the injection system needs replacement while some parts of the low pressure side like filter and low pressure pump are also replaced. The rest of the system needs to be drained and cleaned very well and if it can’t be cleaned very well then replaced. Not sure whether the DPF becomes contaminated and the magic catalyst can’t do it’s job any longer but it wouldn’t surprise me if such also needs to be replaced.

If your insurance covers it, take it to a dealer and get a loaner car as it may take a while and will only cost you your excess rather than that low 5 figure sum.

Here’s some videos you may or may not enjoy :p

PS: I’d either tow the car to the dealer or discuss the situation with the dealer over the phone. I’d Id be looking at the perspective of maintaining the original warranty post repair... If that’s not possible, then that’s something I’d discussed with the insurance company as the car should be returned to pre accident condition (which for a 2017 Colorado I’d assume ment it was part of the 7 year warranty provided at that time)... If hate to loose remaining engine warranty.

If the only way to maintain the remaining couple of years of warranty is to replace the long engine, well that’s an insurance problem and cost.

And now we have the wharfies deciding it's a good time to walk off the job. Great work guys!

I think they have reason to be concerned. We have one confirmed case of transmission from a foreign vessel and most likely an earlier outbreak started via the ports as well.

It is surprising there have been delays with car parts, yet speaking with a tyre supplier, they aren't having any issues getting 4 to 5 40 foot container loads in per week...This is the same supply rate pre-covid...

Sorry it might be slightly off topic, but still along the lines of supplying of parts :)
