I'm looking at cleaning the under carriage of my car so I can paint some sound deadener on it and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to do it. I was thinking of getting a handheld steam cleaner but I'm unsure if that would have enough power on its own.

Anyone have any experience?

Hand held steam cleaners don't work well, tried it before in a engine bay, waste of time.

Probably best, soak everything in degreaser, and buy a pressure washer with the under car washer attachment. Its only for under the car so it doesn't have to be perfect, just remove all the grime so the under coat sticks.

I spray degreaser under the car and shove the sprinkler under it and turn it on full bore

I have a lot of oil and dried coolant under the engine bay, I would like to give it a clean so I can see if anything news happening to it

Take it somewhere that has an outside hoist that you can use.
I once did this when I was restoring a classic with 50 years of built up grime.

I'm in Sydney, who or where can I use an outside hoist?

i agree with pressure washer even go to a car wash place that has them.

i'm a bit unsure as to using sound deadener the product is like chewing gum to apply and also adds weight to car itself when set.also it covers rust until you have a big hole so you don't see it until your seat falls through the floor.the sound deadener holds it together until it pops a big piece out of your car.

i would suggest a thin layer and use some sort of rust treatment before putting it on.its great to use as stone chip guard in the wheel arks :)
